أناة ورفقاً يا يزيد بن مزيد

ومرحمةً كيلا تبنك النوائب

ومرحمةً كيلا تبنك النوائب

Patience and gentleness, O Yazid ibn Mazyad,

Show patience and gentleness, O Yazid son of Mazid

and mercy, lest calamities undo you.

And mercy, lest misfortunes afflict you

تدبر عواقيب الأمور فربما

تدبر عواقيب الأمور فربما

بدالك إن السلم ممن تحاربُ

بدالك إن السلم ممن تحاربُ

Consider the consequences of affairs, for perhaps

Consider the consequences of matters, for perhaps

you will see that peace comes from those you fight.

Your substitute, if there be peace with those you fight

ولا تحملن في بطن جيبك عقرباً

ولا تحملن في بطن جيبك عقرباً

لتعدلها بالبر فالطبع غالبُ

لتعدلها بالبر فالطبع غالبُ

And never carry a scorpion in the bosom of your robe,

And do not carry in your bosom a scorpion

to reform it with kindness, for nature prevails.

To make it good through kindness, for nature prevails

فمن يتتبع عثرة من صديقه

فمن يتتبع عثرة من صديقه

يجدها ولا يبقى له الدهر صاحبُ

يجدها ولا يبقى له الدهر صاحبُ

For whoever seeks out a misstep from his friend

For he who pursues the stumble of a friend

will find it, and no friend will remain his throughout life.

Will find it, and will have no companion forever

ومن يسمع الواشين في أهل وده

ومن يسمع الواشين في أهل وده

فليسَ بمتروك له قط جانبُ

فليسَ بمتروك له قط جانبُ

And whoever listens to slanderers about those he loves,

And whoever listens to slanderers among his loved ones

then no side of his will ever be left untouched.

Will have no side left untouched for him

ونحن لك القربى على بعد دارنا

ونحن لك القربى على بعد دارنا

وكم من قريب الدار وهو مجانب

وكم من قريب الدار وهو مجانب

And we are your kin, though our home is far away,

While we are your kin though our homes are far

and how many a near neighbor is aloof!

Yet how many live nearby, but remain distant
