O Su'd, love has crushed my bones,

and driven sweet sleep from my eye.

O Su'd, how do you think I can sober up, when my drunkenness

comes from the cup of your glance, not cups of wine?

How can I escape, when I have been shot with arrows

poisoned—may my soul ransom the archer!

Had you witnessed what I saw, you would have excused me,

and felt my longing and suffered my passion.

Rather, had you heard what I heard, you would have marveled at

pearls cascading from a peerless string.

If only Qays would face what I faced, though he became

a man of passion and frenzy for love of Layla.

And Jamil did not weary for love of Buthayna

as I have wearied, nor suffer sickness like mine.

Between al-Basit and Nakhla, if you could see—

bān-tree branches amid moons at their full.

Between al-Basit and Nakhla, if you could see—

the ruin of souls and the sickness of bodies.

They showed themselves, trailing their mantles, just as

spears swayed in every valiant warrior's hand.

And they smiled, revealing hail—my life's last spark melts

from it—and radiant pearls in pairs.

What is the state of one whose heart lies at Surdud,

while his body is encamped at Siham?

Because of each woman with a tilted veil, who, when she walks,

sets a dawn swaying beneath the wing of darkness.

Languid in both eyes, her glance does

the work of gleaming swords, bloodstained as they are.

    Fair, long-necked beauties, whose charms

    pierce breasts and strike heads.

Once I was mighty, unbending; but they tamed me—

those eyes—and led me by my reins.

    فاليوم أطوعُ ما يكون لجامي

    I knew fortitude in my heart before this;

but today my bridle is as obedient as can be.

I have become torn of heart, terrified

    by separation, enfolding pain within.

I yearn when lightning toward the qibla, before me,

glitters through clouds late in the night.

And when the doves sing upon their branches,

before dawn, every dove's voice stirs my grief.

O my brothers, is there no protector in love

to save me from these decrees?

What is the state of one whose body dwells in

Yemen, while his heart is in al-Sham?

What is the state of one whose heart lies at Surdud,

while his body is encamped at Siham?

I fell in love with a people whose land is not mine,

whose tents in al-Sham are not my tents.

I gave them my heart to rule; at al-Ghada returns

my joy, and at al-Hima my days return.

But for those who departed, there would not have flowed

from my eye torrent after torrent of tears.

But for remembering them, I would not have departed from

my people, nor would you have left the home where I dwell.

How often I said to lightning fluttering in the darkness:

O lightning, convey my greetings to those far away!

If Qays tasted death for love of Layla,

I likewise am his brother in Islam.

I bear the same passion as al-'Amiri,

when he would make one visit a year.

And if I have wept at parting, so too wept

'Urwa ibn Hizam, before me, at separation.

O you far away! If I could, I would place them

between my innards and my bones.

Beauty grows in the soil of your lands,

and grace there trails its sleeves.

And magic dwells in the blackness of your eyes,

and through lovers pursues every aim.

If beauty has indeed been apportioned, you possess

its fullest share, I swear by my life.

Supple branches and dunes lie beneath their mantles,

and lightning flashes beneath every veil.

I do not forget when I came to you, filled with longing,

while love walked behind me and before me.

So I embraced those figures, and you partook of

those cheeks, and my years grew fruitful.

How blissful that visit made me,

if only it had lasted without weaning!

I am indeed steadfast in what you know,

    abiding in fairness and honor.

And if a man forgets, to loved ones I have never broken

a pledge, nor heard reproach voiced.
