ياO أهلَpeople of رامةَRamah والفوادِand the heart موكّلُdevoted
بكمُto you رَحَلْتمyou departed عنهfrom it أوْor لمdid not تَرحلواyou depart
O people of Ramah, my heart is bound
O people of Ramah and its meadows, I entrust
To you, whether you have departed from it or not.
Myself to you, though you’ve departed or not
لاnot يمنعواthey deny عينيmy eye المنامَsleep وجفنَهاand its eyelid
يَدْمَىbleeds إذاwhen فأرقتموهthen you kept it awake ويَهْمُلُand streams with tears
Let them not deny my eye sleep; its eyelid
Don’t let my eyes sleep, and their lids
Bleeds when you keep it awake, and streams with tears.
Will weep if you keep them awake and bemused
لاdo not تسمعواyou heed فيَّconcerning me الحسودَthe envious one وإنand even if وشىhe slanders
لاdo not تفعلواyou do بحياتكمby your lives لاdo not تفعلواyou do
Do not heed the envious one against me, even if he slanders.
Pay no heed to the envious if they slander
Do not do it—by your lives, do not do it.
Do not do with your lives, do not do
أينَّwhere الرعايةُthe care والتعطفand tenderness منكمfrom you
أيامَthe days when يجمعناbrings us together برامةin Ramah مَنْزِلُa dwelling
Where are your care and tenderness,
Where is the care and sympathy from you?
From the days when a dwelling in Ramah brought us together?
Days that brought us together in Ramah’s dwellings
أينwhere العهودُthe pledges السالفاتُthe bygone ones عَهِدتُهاI knew them
بلrather إينwhere ذيّاكthat الودادُthe affection الأوّلthe first
Where are the bygone pledges I knew?
Where are the old covenants I made with you?
Rather, where is that first affection?
Rather, where is that first affection?
لوif كانthere were ليfor me منكمfrom you نصيبُa share لمwould not يَكْنbe
قلبيmy heart علىupon جمرِembers الغَضاthe ghada tree يتململwrithes
Had I any share from you, never would
If I had a share of you, my heart would not
My heart writhe upon ghada embers.
Be writhing on embers of sorrow and grief
لوif كانthere were ليfor me جلدٌendurance صبرتُI would have endured وإنّماbut rather
لمdid not أدرI know يومَthe day of فراقِكمparting from you ماwhat أفعْلُI should do
Had I endurance, I would have borne it; but
If I had patience, I would have endured, but
On the day you parted, I knew not what to do.
I did not know on the day we parted what to do
كمhow long ذاthis الحِنّI yearn (probable reading) إلىfor الخِيَامِthe tents ودونَهاand before them
فرسانُthe horsemen عامِرAmir ولوشيجُand the spears (probable reading) الذَبَلُthe slender ones
How long must I yearn for the tents, when before them stand
How much this yearning for the tents and around them
The horsemen of Amir and the slender spears?
The horsemen of Aamir and Lushayj, now faded
أصبحتI have become فيin حالthe plight of الحُسَينal-Husayn يذوبhe melts away منْfrom
عطشٍthirst وحوليهand around him الفراتُthe Euphrates السلسلsweet and easy to drink
I have come to be in al-Husayn's plight, melting from
I’ve become like Hussein, melting from
Thirst, with the sweet Euphrates around him.
Thirst, while around him flows the chained Euphrates
بلrather ملِlike (probable reading) يونسَYunus حينَwhen غاضَبَquarreled with قومَهhis people
فغَداًso he came to be (probable reading) ببطنِin the belly of الحوتِthe great fish وهوwhile he was مكبَّلfettered
Rather, like Yunus when he quarreled with his people,
Or like Jonah, when he angrily left his people
And so came to be in the belly of the great fish, fettered.
And next morn was in the whale’s belly, shackled
ولعلَّand perhaps للقاضيfor the judge المفضلal-Mufaddal عطفةٌa kindly inclination
كالعهدِas of old فهوfor he المنعمthe benefactor المتفضِّلthe gracious giver
And perhaps Judge al-Mufaddal will show some kindness,
Perhaps al-Mufaddal has some kindness
As of old, for he is the benefactor, the gracious giver.
Like the old days, as he is the gracious benefactor
