Nothing has ensnared my heart but coquetry and modesty.

Nor has anything captivated me but the glance and the eyes’ dark-and-white beauty.

O departing ones, my heart is in their camel litters.

Why depart when my desire has not yet been fulfilled?

Give me back my heart, for I am a man

Who cannot endure his heart’s absence if it is gone.

And let no talebearer sway you, for often

Lightning flashes with neither dew nor rain.

    وهَاجرين ولا ذنبٌ به هَجَروا

    Not angry, nor did any fault provoke their anger;

And forsaking ones, though no sin prompted their desertion.

When we fall ill, we come to you to visit you.

And you do wrong, so we come to you and apologize.

How you enjoy ease, while my life is all choking grief!

And you sleep, while all my sleep is wakefulness.

Nor have I forgotten any old pledge of yours.

Nor have I ceased yearning, nor have life’s changes changed me.

Nor have I heeded the reproachers when they reproached,

Nor the talebearers, whether they were few or many.

I am wide-ranging through deserts and night travel; indeed,

I press on where the keen, hard-steeled sword is baffled.

And I bring the people renown when no deft poet is there,

And am poetry’s lion when no mauling lion is there.

I reward the noble for their kindness with praises.

Exhortation falls short of them, age upon age.

And I do not deny kindness from a generous man.

Far be it from me to hide what cannot be hidden.

O rider of the pale camels, whose slowest pace is a swift stride,

And you who cross the night unguided, traveling while it is pitch-dark.
