My two friends, I did not shun my people out of hatred,
My dear friend, I did not abandon my people out of boredom
nor out of weariness that left my mind bewildered.
Nor because my restless mind grew weary of them

Nor have I a substitute for the Yemeni chieftain;
I do not blame the people of Yemen over much
and what father can equal a child's own father?
What father is not like his son?

Rather, it was words from a blameworthy fool—
But the utterances of a despised fool
and far be it from you to approve a fool's words—
And far be it from you to accept the words of a fool

And the false comparisons some people made about me
among people, a person has many a likeness.
People often find their match among others

What student can match any master?

Schemes that make one forget the scheming of Joseph's brothers,
Plots forgotten next to the schemes of Joseph's brothers
and Benjamin's detention as a pledge, and his brother's sale.
And the pledge of Benjamin's brother sold into slavery

So when I saw how rough this affair was to navigate,
When I saw the matter was thorny to tread
and every discerning man slept, heedless of discernment,
And the prudent were asleep to insight

I turned my she-camel away from the Yemeni mountain pass,
I turned my she-camel from the people of Yemen
and told her, 'O she-camel, do not enter it.'
And said to her, "Camel, do not lead me back to them."

Indeed, one I had formerly treated kindly has been ungrateful to me,
I was loyal to those I once cherished
and one I shield with my ribs has forsaken me.
And I defended those I wrap my arms around

وكيفand how يخونbetrays المرءُa man عهدَthe covenant of ذويهhis kin

And how can a man sever the soft part of his own nose?
How can one oblige what turns up its nose?
And how can a man betray his covenant with his kin?
How can one betray one's own family?
فياso, O عينُeye أنif ربعٌa dwelling عفىhas faded away فتجلديthen be steadfast
وياand O نفسُsoul إنif خِلٌّa dear friend جَفىturns away فدعيهthen leave him
So, O eye, if a dwelling has faded away, be steadfast;
Oh eye, if a quarter disappoints, then show patience
and O soul, if a dear friend turns away, let him go.
Oh soul, if an intimate abandons, then leave him

When a man of shortcomings takes a worthy man's place,
When an inferior assumes the station of one noble
and a man of standing is no longer esteemed,
And the lord of prestige becomes undesirable

then a man's life is not desirable
Then life loses its savor for him
to him, and the taste of death is not repugnant.
And the taste of death becomes not so bitter
