    If the turns of the nights have come between us,

    or our tents and yours have drawn far apart,

    when separation cast me away from you, and I was embraced

    by Yemen—or you were embraced far from Sha'm—

    then my love is that same love, and my longing

    that same longing, and passion remains passion.

    لم تكدّر صَفاءَهُ الأيام

    And what was between us still abides;

    the days have not clouded its clarity.

    So peace from me be upon you; and a land

    whose people include you—peace be upon it.

    And the domes at ʿAwsajah—may there always

    be clouds pouring abundant rain upon them.

    You, O Qasim, are the one I mean; and the people

    you belong to are a people I hold in honor.

    Our origin is one, we reckon; yet

    you are its radiance, and you are its summit.

    كم جرى بعدَك الرجالُ وقاموا

    And on the day of the race, you are the first to finish;

    how many men have run behind you and come to a halt!

    قرّبتْ بُعْدَه لنا الأرحامُ

    I do not call to you from a far-off place;

    kinship has drawn its distance near for us.

    قد مضى للصدود عامٌ وعامُ

    It is no great thing if we join you for a day;

    a year and another year have passed in estrangement.

    So remember us, for we have not forgotten our love for you.

    Do not sleep, for we do not sleep.

    You are the patron of the noble—may time never destroy you—

    and the stallion of speech wherever speech is uttered.

    Damad, since you settled there, would incur

    guilt if reproach were to settle there.

    So may morning rainclouds water the town that embraced you,

    and may glory and permanence always be yours.
