فامسيتُso I spent the evening ذاpossessing دمعٍtears علىupon الخدِthe cheek دَافقِstreaming
I lay sleepless for a night-visiting vision of Umaymah.
I was kept awake by a gentle breeze from Amimah at dawn,
So I spent the evening with tears streaming over my cheek.
So I wept, with tears flowing down my cheeks.
وهَاجand stirred ليin me البرقُthe lightning اليمانيYemeni لوعةًheartache
وقدand already لاحَflashed مَاthe space بينbetween العُذيبal-ʿUdhayb وبارقand Bariq
And the Yemeni lightning stirred heartache in me,
The Yemeni lightning stirred up anguish in me,
As it flashed between al-ʿUdhayb and Bariq.
As it flashed between Udhaib and Baraq.
ذكرتI remembered بهاthrough it ليلىLayla ابنةَdaughter of العمِthe paternal uncle والصِّبَاand youth
وماand not هَيّنٌeasy فقدُloss of الحبيبthe beloved المفارقِwho departs
Through it I remembered Layla, my paternal cousin, and youth.
It reminded me of Layla the daughter of my paternal uncle in her youth,
And losing the beloved who departs is no easy thing.
Parting with a beloved is never easy.
وهيهاتَand far beyond reach ليلىLayla وهيwhile she منكcompared with you صَبِيّةٌa young girl
وقدand already لاحَappeared منكon you الشيْبُgray hair فوقَabove المفارِقِthe hair-partings
But Layla is beyond reach, a young girl compared with you,
Alas, Layla you were just a lass, while gray hair appears on my temples.
While gray hair has already appeared above the partings of your hair.
The gray of old age contrasts with the black of youth.

She journeyed by night among women of Rabiʿah ʿAmir,
You walked among the women of Rabi’ah and ‘Amir,
Or companions, with red ornaments and red she-camels.
As lovely as the red camels with their elegant posture.

Behold that one: a bough of the ban-tree beneath her veil,
Behold, that branch of wild plum beneath its leaves,
And dune-sand beneath the full moon of the eastern horizons.
And the sand of Naqa beneath the rising sun.

And when you see that one's eyes, it is as though
And behold her eyes, as if gazing at,
You see the smiling narcissus amid the gardens.
The narcissus blossoms amidst gardens.

Oh, how often she embraced you in the night's darkness,
Oh, how often in dusk she would embrace you,
With a throat like a ewer's and a smile like a lightning flash.
With a jug’s lip and a flashing smile.
فوافيتُهاso I came to her منfrom بعدafter عَامينtwo years وَلَّيَاboth had passed
وماand not الناسُpeople إلاّexcept مِنْof مشوقٍone filled with longing وشائقand one inspiring longing
Then I came to her after two years had passed,
After two years I met her again,
And people are but those who yearn and those who awaken yearning.
People are ever yearning and eager.

And we traveled through a night on a Shadani she-camel,
One night we walked hand in hand,
Yemeni in lineage, with outward-turned elbows.
She, of noble Yemeni lineage, slender of waist.

They left Siham behind, where its tamarisks dance,
We left arrows scattered where gazelles play,
And its valley's vegetation rises high above the ground.
And valleys covered in abundant vegetation.

وفيand in كلevery كورٍcamel-saddle باشقٌa sparrowhawk فوقَabove باشقٍa sparrowhawk
And they passed Ghanm, charmed by no stopping place,
We passed sheep who cared not for our abode,
And on every camel-saddle, a sparrowhawk above a sparrowhawk.
In every plain a peak atop a peak.
وفيand in بيتhouse مسعودMasʿud أنْحْنَthey knelt (unclear spelling) بمنزلat a lodging

And at Bayt Masʿud they knelt at a lodging,
In Masa’ud’s abode we rested,
Where dwells the sword of God's faith, the best of creatures.
Where the sword of God’s faith resides, best of mankind.

And lightning appeared to her at Bayt Khalifah,
Lightning flashed for her in the Caliph’s abode,
Flickering within a layered, rain-fringed cloud.
Fluttering with delicate symmetry.

I remembered Jamal al-Din, the noblest of all who walk:
I remembered the beauty of Jamal al-Din, most noble of men,
ʿAli ibn ʿImran, the Qubayʿi of Ghafiq.
Ali ibn ‘Imran al-Quba’i, so gracious.
