أُجانبI draw away عنfrom رملِthe sands of الحمىthe sanctuary وأعودُand I return
وقلبيand my heart بالسكانِfor the inhabitants فيهthere عميدُlove-stricken
I draw away from the sands of the sanctuary, then return,
Strangers to the sands of Al-Himma I return
and my heart is love-stricken for those who dwell there.
My heart bound to its people remains steadfast
وأذكرهُمand I remember them ذكرَthe remembrance of الرضيعthe suckling لأمّهfor its mother
فتقبلُso begins عينيmy eye بالدمِوعwith tears تَجُودpours generously
And I remember them as a suckling remembers its mother,
I remember them as an infant remembers its mother
so my eye begins pouring out tears.
My eyes pour forth tears that I freely give
ويضعفُand weakens صبريmy patience حينwhen تقوىgrows strong صبابتيmy ardent longing
فينقصُso diminishes ذاthis منيin me وتلكand that تزيدincreases
And my patience weakens when my longing grows strong;
My patience weakens as my youth grows strong
so this dwindles in me, while that increases.
This part of me declines while that increases
حمامةَO dove بطنِthe hollow of الواديينthe two valleys ترنمَّيsing
فقدfor indeed عادhas returned وجديmy yearning منكfrom you وهوand it is جديدnew
O dove of the hollow of the two valleys, sing!
The dove in the valley's midst sings to me
For my yearning has returned through you, fresh once more.
For your presence has returned and is renewed
أراكِI see you إذاwhen سجّعتِyou coo رجَّعْتI echo منْشِداًsinging
فمنso from هاbehold هناhere سَجْعقyour cooing (probable reading) وثمَّand there نشيدa song
When I see you coo, I answer in song;
When you sing, you bring back the poet
so from here comes your cooing, and from there a song.
So who is here, rhyming and composing verse?
حَنَنْتِyou yearned لإِلفٍfor a mate غابَwas absent عنكِfrom you وإنماand only
حنينيmy longing إلىfor القومِthe people الذينwhom أريدI desire
You yearned for a mate gone from you, whereas
You are gentle to a friend long gone from you
my longing is only for the people I desire.
Yet my longing is for a people I desire
ذكرتُI remembered التيher who للغصنfor the bough مِنْهاfrom her مَعَاطفٌgraceful curves
وللظبيand for the gazelle منهاfrom her مقلتانtwo eyes وَجيدُand a neck
I remembered her from whom the bough takes its graceful curves,
I recall one whose branches are cloaked
and from whom the gazelle takes its two eyes and neck.
And whose young gazelle has two eyelids and neck

وإنand if خطرتshe sways تحتbeneath القضيبthe bough فرودthen a tender maiden
When she smiles, revealing her teeth, they are scattered [pearls];
When she smiles, her teeth shine white
and if she sways beneath the bough, she is a tender maiden.
When she walks under the rod, she bows her head

I settled in Tihamah, while her people pitched camp
I camped at Tahamiyya while its people settled
in Najd; a great distance lies between the two encampments.
In Najd, and between the two encampments is a distance

O our neighbor, do not listen to anyone who slanders me;
You have given us refuge, do not hear any slander of me
for my love for you is firm within my ribs.
For my love for you is confirmed within my ribs
فقدfor one may يُتْهَمُbe accused الإنسانُa person وهوand he is مُبرؤٌinnocent
ويُنسَبُand is associated عندwith الغيّerror وهوand he is رشيدُrightly guided
For a person may be accused while innocent,
For man may be suspected yet still innocent
and be associated with error while rightly guided.
And accused by the ignoramus yet still rightly-guided
سَئمتُI grew weary of مقاميmy stay فيin سِهَامِSiham ومربعيand my dwelling-place

I have wearied of my stay in Siham, though my sojourn
I have grown weary of living in Sihām and Marba‘
is recent, and the valley of the Ash‘arin is lush.
Conversation, and Wadi Asharin, noisy
وأكديand proved fruitless طِلابيmy quest بينbetween مَوْرٍMawr وسُرْددand Surdud
فماso there is no أحدٌanyone يُهْدىis offered إليهto him قصيدُa poem
And my quest has proved fruitless between Mawr and Surdud,
I spur my camels between Mawr and Surad
for there is no one to whom a poem may be offered.
Yet no one is guided to my ode

And if I turned once more toward the Husami palace,
If I returned to the palace of Al-Ĥusām out of passion
poverty would retreat from me, driven away.
Poverty would return to hound me ceaselessly

And I am but one of Mu‘aybid's servants,
I am but a slave of Mu‘ayyad
and the stars of night, like me, are servants to him.
While the stars of nightfall are like me, slaves to him

And I am but one of the saplings planted by his kindness,
I am but one of the saplings he has planted
and the bounty of benefactors is not to be denied.
There is no denial of the blessings of generous benefactors

فمنهاso from them علىon إثرthe heels of الوخيدswift pacing وخيدُswift pacing
I sang of him to spur the camels when they grew weary,
I inspired the riding-beasts when I recalled him
so they strode swiftly, swift stride after swift stride.
Among them the lonely one and the affectionate one hastened

وحَوْضُand a pool of ندىًbounty مَاnot ذُمّwas censured وُرُودcoming to drink
I sought spacious courts never too narrow for a guest,
I headed to open plains without confined dwellings
and a pool of bounty where coming to drink is never censured,
With a pool of dew that has no blame or flowers

لأنbecause الثناpraise يبقىendures وذاكand that يبيدُperishes
and a splendid man who has spent his wealth in pursuit of praise,
The best wealth is praise, for praise remains
because praise endures, while that wealth perishes.
While wealth itself perishes and fades away

His deeds are white-marked, as though
He is inspired in his actions, as if
a shaft of radiant dawn were upon them.
The shining dawn itself stands over him

He grows more generous whenever the rain is miserly,
He increases in generosity whenever life is miserly
and he showers bounty while the hands of givers are frozen.
He is clouded in mist while the hands of the stingy are frozen

And his courts grow fertile while the lands lie barren,
He enriches barrens while the lands are arid
and his face shines bright while calamities are black.
He illuminates a face while tribulations are darknesses

A mother who bears his like has truly borne a noble son,
She who gave birth to him gave birth to one unmatched
and Qahtan has begotten nobly, and so has Hud.
And Qahtan gave birth, as did Hud

And the lofty glory of Bilal ibn Burdah has not crumbled,
The lofty abodes of Bilaal ibn Bardah did not crumble
for this man has built what that man used to build.
For this one has rebuilt what that one constructed

So let the ambitious not hope to match his reach;
So let not the ambitious covet his distinction
for no wood is found like the wood of fragrant incense.
For the like of the bamboo rod is not found again

Not every thundering cloud brings rain
nor is every blade with a gleaming watered pattern iron.
Nor is every shining one Indian steel

O Abu Ahmad—no, rather ‘Afif—and here I am,
O Father of Ahmad! No, but honorable - here I am
calling upon Abu Bakr, amid long-necked camels.
Calling upon Abu Bakr while the riding beasts are led

I crossed on them the wilderness's breadth and length,
I struck across the width of the desert and its length
to you; among them are a driver and a witness.
To you, with both driver and sacrifice

The stinginess of Ghuwayr and his family did not harm me
Fashal is my Khurasan, and you are Yazid.
For the plait of my Khurāsānī stallion and you as provision
