وعذلْتُهand I reproached it فأبىbut it refused يُطيعُto obey العُذّلاthe reproachers
وعذلْتُه فأبى يُطيعُ العُذّلا
I consoled this love-stricken heart, but it found no solace.
I asked this steadfast heart but it would not beseech
And I reproached it, but it refused to obey the reproachers.
I admonished it but it refused to heed admonition

And I rebuked this wounded heart, but it would not desist.
I scolded this aching heart but it was not made wary
And I restrained this sore eyelid, but it said no.
I restrained these sickly eyelids but they said no

Would that the camel-drivers, on the morning of rest, had not sung,
Would that the warriors at dawn were at ease after their warring
and the caravan had not urged on the mature she-camels.
And the riders when the guide hastened the slow camels

صَبْريmy patience ولمand not أكُI was راضياًcontent أنthat ترْحَلاَshe should depart
صَبْري ولم أكُ راضياً أن ترْحَلاَ
Since I was told, 'Rudayna has departed,' I was betrayed
Since I was told that Rudainah had departed and betrayed me
by my patience; I was not content that she should leave.
My patience was lost and I was not pleased that she left
رحلواthey departed بمُثْقَلَةٍwith a heavy one الروادفthe haunches خُفّفْwas made light

خصْراً فما أحلى الخفيفَ المُثْقلاَ
They departed with a woman heavy of haunches, made slender
They set forth with heavily loaded litters then lightened
at the waist—how lovely the slender yet full-hipped one!
Their burdens - how pleasant is the lightened heavy load!

والليلُ حينَ جَلَتْ ترائبها أنجلا
And they travelled with her by night, concealing their mounts' steps;
They traveled with her, hiding the track of their mounts
and night cleared when she bared her upper breast.
And when night fell, its darkness hid them completely

They perfumed the valley through which they passed,
They perfumed the valley through which they passed
so its dust is wafting musk and aloeswood.
So its dust became musk diffusing perfumes

Oh would that they had tethered the mounts though
my eyes, and not let the mounts carry them across the desert's breadth.
Before my sight and not disappeared into the horizon

ليسَis not المُعافىthe healthy one يستويequal والسُبنَلىand the afflicted (uncertain reading)
ليسَ المُعافى يستوي والسُبنَلى
How vast the gulf between me and my loved ones!
Great is the difference between me and my beloveds
The healthy is not equal to the afflicted [uncertain reading].
The healthy cannot be compared to the injured and weak

They said, 'You have forsaken wine.' I said, 'I have forsaken it.'
They said you have abandoned comfort, I said I have abandoned it
And you abstained during their month of fasting, when it came.
And refrained a month's fast when they arrived

Tomorrow when Shawwal comes I will still be found
among the wine jars, shirted and robed.
Cloaked and robed between the threshing floors

An old man's repentance amounts to no more
a month, even if he were al-Junayd, the most virtuous.
Than a month even if he were the greatest ascetic

It is the drink of the dwellers in the Gardens; ask
It is the wine of Paradise drank by its dwellers when they asked
about that whoever has read the revealed Book.
About the one who read the Book sent down

What have I to do with Tihama? Praise has gone unsold
What is Tihama to me when its passes were closed
there, and every door has become locked again.
And every door returned locked

أن أمدحَ الملكَ المظفر أوّلا
And poetry is mine; whenever I compose, it is my duty
Poetry is incumbent on me so when I compose
to praise King al-Muzaffar first.
I must first praise the victorious king

Yet my poetry falls short of the least of his qualities,
My poetry falls short of even a few of his attributes
even were I al-Bu'ayth and Jarwal.
If I were Bu'ayth or Jarwal the most eloquent

What can my parchment do, and where do my lines stand
What can my poetry and epics do
beside one whose cloud of generosity has filled the world?
Against the clouds of his magnanimity that filled the horizon

you will find leafy groves and pure water, smooth to drink.
You find perfect and chained pearls

the sea of generosity, and gaze upon the sun of glory.
Of benignity with the sun of loftiness shining

A king and father of a king, whose father, as you know,
King Abu Malik his father with your knowledge
was a king, crowned and robed in glory.
Is a king crowned with loftiness and clothed in power

The outer reaches of the frontiers called to him, so he strengthened them
The borders called him so he reinforced them
with cavalry, and sent a great army to every frontier.
With troops and sent to each border an army

With battalions in Dathina and battalions
that shook Bish, so it spent the night trembling.
That made the ground shake so it quaked

And the people of Haly tremble for fear of him;
The people of Hail feared him
and al-Birk would hurry if it heard the hand-clapper.
And would have fled terrified if they heard his shout

And Mecca's preacher never mentions Yusuf
The preacher of Mecca cannot mention Joseph
without those there proclaiming God's greatness and oneness.
Except that he exalts and praises from his minbar

The wilderness from Aden to Khabafi Minna
was filled by his troops' horses until it brimmed.
Was filled with the horses of his soldiers to overflowing

So his rule is above all others and his kingdom
above the Tubba' kings and the Kisras of old.
Above the Tababi and the first Akasira
