How long shall I seek news of you and keep asking,

While my tears stream over my cheek?

And how long shall I conceal my love for you, now that

Signs and proofs against me have become plain?

And vainly I seek union with you, after

The slanderers incited others against us and the reproacher persisted.

And I say, "Your home draws near to ours."

    Far-fetched—indeed, far-fetched—is what I say!

The camel-driver was unfair to you when he sang

To the worn-out she-camels as they trotted onward.

You departed; since you left, the water at noon is no longer

Sweet, nor do the bān trees beside the pools sway.

And your caravans set out, as though

They bore the hearts that bore them.

And on the camels are supple maidens and maidens with swelling breasts,

And long-necked gazelles, armlets, and anklets,

    And eye-sockets, head-wraps, and wild-cow calves,

And bracelets, cutting swords, and quivering spears,

    And buttocks, flanks, and lips,

And smiling mouths, wrists, and fingertips,

And kohl-lined eyes, and upper chests

Polished smooth, and face-veils and fine under-robes.

I long to draw near to you, but I am barred by

A vast lowland plain and a far-stretching barrier.

So may joy-bringing waters drench your ruins, O Banān—

The streams, that is, and the clouds pouring rain.
