Have you heard of the camel-driver as he sang the camels onward?

On Muhajjar's day, did he descend to the lowlands or climb the highlands?

They brought me glad news that Layla had returned

To her homelands, and joy had returned as at the beginning.

And they told me the ravine was sweet-flowing once more

With the return to its waters—may I be ransom for that watering place!

Welcome to al-ʿAmiriyya's caravan as it arrives!

For the coolness of meeting it has quenched my thirst.

    فاليومَ أُخْطرُ في المعَاهد مُنْشدا

    After their departure I had been lonely;

So today I stride through the familiar haunts, chanting.

    فتبَاعدتْ وغدوتُ عنها مُبْعَدا

    She is my neighbor, my curtained tent beside hers;

Then she went far away, and I became banished from her.

And every night her phantom never ceases

To visit me, its waist-wrap drawn off by the dew,

Crossing tracklessly the Hijaz uplands, and beyond them

The lowlands of al-Hima—marvel at how it found its way!

O travelers bound for Dhuʾal, that homeland

Whose swords refuse to yield for one under its protection,

Turn your mounts toward Qurrat al-ʿAyn, where

You will find Mecca and the Mosque.

Rather, halt beside Ibn al-Husayn, and kiss

His brow, and kiss his hand.

Then, when you have seen ʿAli, proclaim

That you have seen Yathrib and Muhammad.

That is the Imam, son of the Imam, and he

Is indeed the Imam's brother; through that one's guidance people are guided.

He is the one whose like, since Ahmad departed, has not been seen

In the radiant community, succeeding Ahmad.

So may God protect their union from breaking apart.

God has spread his shade over all creatures

By keeping him alive; all would give themselves as his ransom.

    لا زال محمودَ المقامِ مُسَدّدا

    Through his excellence, he sets the Imam's affairs aright;

May he remain praised in his station and guided aright.

There is none in the Tihama lowlands but prays for him:

May God avert from him the causes of death.

And their lives are a shield for the father of Abu Bakr,

And their prayer is that he may live forever.

Abu ʿUmar, I am indeed filled with longing for you,

As the thirsty long for cool, clear water.

Ever since they told me that your body was ailing,

They kindled a blazing fire in my nerves.

And I wished myself among those departing, that I might see,

Like the others, your blessed countenance, and rejoice.

But weakness held me back from my companions,

So I sent my written page and everlasting praise.

Would that I were where you could be seen; would that I were

In the caravan when they crossed the desert waste toward you.

They made pilgrimage and visited, while I was denied; and I

Do not reckon myself to have any binding claim upon you.

O Qurrat al-ʿAyn, take pride in the honor of having him!

For the sky shines with the crescent moon when it appears.

O Lord, restore ʿAli to health for us, and heal him

Swiftly; keep him safe and spare him death.

And the life of Ibn al-Husayn be renewed.

Both together; his excellence cannot be denied.

From me, and salute his dwelling and the Mosque.

Tell him that I am among the least of his slaves,

And the protecting master watches over his slaves.

    فاللهُ أسألُه يُطيِل له المَدى

    So let him ask the Merciful for the eternal abode for me;

For I ask God to prolong his span of life.

And peace be upon his company, for they

Are like the stars: whoever follows them finds the way.
