Doves of Dhāt al-Sidr, may the lote trees delight you.
O doves of the sidr tree, the sidr is good for you,
Sing, for remembrance stirs the lovesick lover.
Sing, for youth is enlivened by mention.

I wept for doves that vanished from you, but in truth
I wept for a dove that was absent from you, though
my weeping is for Laylā, for separation from her has lasted long.
My weeping is for Layla, since separation from her grew long.

O enchantress of the eyes, why is it that whenever
Sorceress of the eyes, you own me; whenever
a month ends, you say, 'Another month after it'?
A month passes, I say after it “a month.”

You who sustain my hopes of union, while death stands before it—
My excuses to you for union or death beside it
if I spend the night thirsty, may no rain fall.
When I spend the night thirsty, no rainfall comes down.

Whenever you trail your mantle, there appears to my eye
When you draw your cloak and my eyelids shine,
a slender branch, beneath which pale tawny dunes reveal themselves.
A staff appears beneath which are curvy dunes.

And I like the course the scarf takes when it flows
around your waist—alas for me, if only that waist were mine!
Around your waist – would that the waist might be obtained!

Come, lay your fingertips and their softness
Come, place your mouth’s fruit on me, make it soften;
upon the liver within me, where embers blaze.
On my liver, which embers excite, let it kindle.

your speech is magic that no magic can rival.
Is magic no other magic equals.

When you touch the lute, though the lute is dry,
green leaves spring up at its tips.
Green leaves stir on its edges.

And you are like a tender balsam shoot when it bends:
You are like the flexible branch of wishām when it bends,
for softness lies in its curve, and perfume in its scent.
With softness in its cove and fragrance on its crest.

You, not the women of ʿĀmir, carried off my heart;
You’ve gone off with my heart, beyond the women of ‘Āmir;
I can bear separation from them, but from you I cannot.
I have patience with them, but with you I’ve no patience.

And my companions said, 'You drink wine and nothing else.'
My friends said, “You drink wine alone,”
So I said, 'I have wine from my slayer's saliva.'
So I said, “By her saliva that kills me, it’s wine.”

If in your eyes and neck you are a gazelle,
If you are a gazelle in glance and cheek,
then Abū al-Ṭammāḥ is a sea in his generosity.
Then Abū al-Tamāḥ in his generosity is a sea.
