    By God, O you full-grown riding-camels yonder,

    Do you know who is borne upon the mounts?

    As for your howdahs—dark nights and morning light,

    And within them, sand dunes and swaying boughs.

    They departed for Najd and Khaym, yet love for them

    Remains within my ribs, as though they had never left.

    حَكّمْتُهمْ لكنّهم لم يَعْد لوا

    I loved them, yet they were not treated fairly;

    I made them arbiters, but they did not act justly.

    لا مُجْمِلٌ فيهم ولا مُتَجمِّلُ

    None among them mentions me, and none remembers;

    None among them acts kindly or shows graciousness.

    [They begrudged me] their phantom that circles my bed,

    While I do not begrudge giving my last breath.

    والعهدُ يُرعى والحكايةُ تنقل

    O Zaynab's people, I have pledges at al-Ghada;

    And a pledge should be honored, and the tale passed on.

    O Zaynab's people, I have bonds with you,

    And closeness, forbearance, and entreaty.

    Your homelands are my true homeland, and you

    And I are like a bone with no joint in it.

    Is it then fair that I should be left thirsty,

    While your pools hold sweet, smoothly flowing water?

    And I visit your land, my aim a glance,

    Only to be kept from attaining it and put off with excuses.
