By God, O dunes of al-Liwa, tell me:

    How fare those wide-eyed gazelles?

By God, O dunes of al-Liwa, is there a glance

From Zaynab's kin at al-Liwa to please me?

    وصُدود يومٍ واحدٍ يَكفيني

    They shunned me for years, and stayed apart for just as long;

And one single day's rejection is enough for me.

If the raider had made restitution to a lover,

I would have paid the price, for love holds what entices me.

And I would ransom him whose mouth's front teeth

Turn me back whenever I think of robbing him.

    يَرْتجّ اسفلَه نقا يَبْرين

    A moon upon a bough that sways amid the spear-shafts;

Beneath it quivers a dune of Yabrin.

Why do I yearn for al-ʿUdhayb and all within it,

While its cupbearer is miserly and gives me no drink?

The bān tree's boughs are not green, now that they have gone

Away from it; nor does the water of al-Liwa flow.

What ails the doves, that their weeping stirs me?

Do you think the doves' sorrows are my sorrows?

By God, lay a hand upon my liver and lament,

If what concerns me concerns you.

And indeed I have wearied of estrangement in the abode of hurt,

And I have borne from Asma what wears me out.
