Ask the dwelling about the environs of Salʿ and Laʿlaʿ:

When did the departing beloved’s camel litters set out?

    وفي ربعِ ليلى العامرية فارتع

    And inquire about news of Layla al-ʿĀmiriyya;

And roam freely in Layla al-ʿĀmiriyya’s dwelling.

For I have seen that, when a man’s beloved departs,

Longings tug him in every direction.

O nights of the protected pasture, may every lingering raincloud water you!

You were indeed the lovers’ sweet basil—return!

Alas, how long shall I go on enthralled

By thoughts of a beloved enthralled by parting?

And how often the days fill my heart and my eye with hope

For Layla—I have indeed sought the remotest hope—

One of the fair-skinned, demure women, whose sash flows

Over a form like a flourishing bān-tree shoot.

When the wind stirs her, its south wind offers

You a breath of fragrant ambergris.
