Ah, if only al-ʿĀmiriyya’s phantom would visit by night,

so a heart scorched by longing might find rest.

And oh, if only the pale camels of the departing had carried me

that morning when she-camels bore al-ʿĀmiriyya away.

She stayed but showed no kindness; then she left, leaving

no blood that did not flow, no heart she did not burn.

Slanderers turned her from me, so she drew away,

and that sleep-robbing phantom shunned me too.

Had Layla not been in the land of Tihāma,

no bān tree or stony ridge in the lowlands would have stirred my longing.

And were it not for the east wind from Najd carrying her fragrance,

it would not scent the nostrils and linger fragrantly.

O you, be gentle with a heart you have taken captive,

for gentleness has always been a companion’s duty.

And do not make me like Majnūn of ʿĀmir,

for, if you knew, I am more wretched and more lovesick.

I would not have known love, but for the hollows

around your eyes, which showed me where to love.

And it is said that a heart sometimes, toward another heart,

guides desire, while one eye clings to another.

And when we crossed the sands by night—the sands of ʿUnayza—

and one party headed for al-Shām, another for Iraq,

I returned with nothing but a regretful man’s sigh

over you—or else a tear pouring forth.
