    Speak of nothing but love

    That lingered in harmony's tears.

And forgive me if one day I was

    At fault, like all humankind.

    And remember a beautiful time

    That passed, year after year.

And let your mind wander when you meet me,

    In my imagination; then sleep.

    مَهْمَا قُلْتِ لَنْ تُلامِي

    You are my love, however much you rage;

Whatever you say, you will not be blamed.

O beloved of the heart, you are

My goal, all that I seek.

For my burning in my longing—

How can it be expressed in words?

How can I be healed of a torment

Whose beginning is union with the noble?

If I lingered, he came to me,

While I was awake or in a dream.

    عَلَّهُ يَدْرٍي هُيَامِي

    He was never absent from my heart;

Perhaps he knows my consuming love.

I have drunk wine from him

    When he rose in greeting.

Then she rose, then made to take

    Two measured steps.

    A kiss from her lips—

How I had longed for it for a year!

    Then union came from her

    After my long stay,

Quenching a fire that had raged on

In the tinder of my bones.

    حُبُّهُ مِثْلُ الْحُسَامِ

    So always be gentle with the lovelorn one;

His love is like a sharp sword.

For he who journeys with love

    Is not among the base.

    وَجْهُهُ بَدْرُ التَّمَامِ

    His heart listens with longing;

His face is the moon at its fullest.

A smile appeared upon the face

When he offered something in closing.

    Estrangement in love—we

    May see it in conflict,

Or see a face of another kind

    In a few words.

An estrangement that remained a fantasy,

Seeking to be bridled a little.

So gather up a heart that has gone too far,

And plant the roses of peace.
