And verse like strung pearls or precious pearls—

You have brought it forth—God bless you, what poetry!

    You have brought what no versifier can achieve;

You have brought what pierces souls more deeply than sorcery.

It is uttered like scattered pearls; behind it

Lie meanings before which the minds of thinkers bow.

It pleased my nature and fell gently on my ear,

And delighted my soul; do not blame me for intoxication.

It enraptured me until I seemed to be sipping

Strong wine, and because of it wine's rapture crept through me.

People have indeed woven coats of mail and perfected them,

Yet in this, the greatest glory belongs to David.

Your beautiful ode, which you composed,

Rose high in the eyes of the discerning, men of noble stock,

And, for its greatness, held an exalted place in souls.

It is seen as a white blaze upon the brow of time.

How much more so, when you recited it in praise of one

Whose glory surpasses every praise bestowed upon him:

Ali, Commander of the Faithful, at our head,

The Imam of guidance after the Prophet, father of the radiant ones.

He ascended a height none but Ahmad had ascended—

A lofty station, more manifest than the sun at noon.

So praising him is glory enough for you, forever.

You have excelled; tomorrow you will win abundant reward.

Yours is the merit, O you who have gained every virtue,

Too great for enumeration, counting, or reckoning.

    And take from me praises for as long as I live;

So remain safe in bliss throughout your life.
