Sol 6.1

  1. ألا قل لنار الفؤاد

    شجوناً وللعين فاستعبري

    Ah, tell the fire of the heart

    of sorrows, and tell the eye: “Then weep.”

  2. فقد طرق الدين بعد الطفوف

    شجى مثله الذكر لم يذكر

    For, after al-Tufuf, the faith has been visited

    by a grief whose like memory has never recalled.

  3. مصاب أعاد مصاب الحسين

    بعاشور في كربلا والغري

    A calamity that renewed al-Husayn’s calamity,

    in Ashur, at Karbala and al-Ghari.

  4. جرى في القضا إسمه باسمه

    فغالهما اشأم الأشهر

    His name ran beside his namesake’s in fate,

    so the most ill-omened of months claimed them both.

  5. فذاك بعاشره قد اصيب

    وهذا بثانيه فاستشعر

    For that one was struck down on its tenth,

    and this one on its second—so take it to heart.

  6. وذاك مضى من أذى البارقات

    وهذا مضى من أذى المفتري

    And that one died from the wounds of flashing blades,

    and this one died from the harm of the slanderer.

  7. وذاك رمته يد المنكرين

    وهذا رمته يد المنكر

    And that one was struck by the hand of the deniers,

    and this one was struck by the hand of the denier.

  8. فلم أر من مات رهن الفراش

    سواه ومصطلم العسكر

    So I have seen none who died confined to bed

    save him and the one whose army was annihilated.

  9. فقل لعيون الهدى والندى

    لمنظوم دار الشؤون انثري

    So say to the eyes of guidance and generosity:

    “Scatter the strung tears flowing from the tear ducts.”

  10. ويا طائر البين من بعد أن

    علقت به في البرايا طر

    And O bird of separation, now that

    you have clung to him among humankind, fly!

  11. فلست بمستمسك مثله

    فطول بما شئت أو قصر

    For you will not seize another like him,

    so prolong it as you wish, or shorten it.

  12. ويا حادثات الزمان انكفي

    فلو رمت شرواه لم تظفر

    And O calamities of time, desist!

    For if you sought his equal, you would not find one.

  13. فلولا انطوى رزؤه بالحسين

    طوى كل رزء فلم ينشر

    For, had his loss not been enfolded with al-Husayn’s,

    it would have folded up every loss, never to be unfolded.

  14. فعز به الدين والزاهدين

    وأهليه يا ربة المفخر

    So offer condolences for him to the faith and the ascetics,

    and to his family, O mistress of glory.

  15. فلا ولد بعده تكفلين

    ولا بعل يعلوك في منبر

    For you will foster no child after him,

    nor a husband who rises above you on a pulpit,

  16. سوى محسن وفتاه الجواد

    ومن من خلال التعدي بري

    save Muhsin and his lad, al-Jawad,

    and whoever is free of the traits of transgression.

  17. فتى ود معنى ثرى حله

    فصار يضاف ثرى حيدر

    A youth who desired the meaning of the soil where he dwelt,

    and so came to be joined to the soil of Haydar.

  18. فابرزت معنى الذي وده

    وفاز فأرخت ود الغري

    Thus I brought forth the meaning of what he desired,

    and he attained it; so I dated it: “He desired al-Ghari.”
