زمن الأنس تولى وانقضى

حاملا ما كان لي من أمل

The time of fellowship has passed away and ended,

Bearing away what hope I had.

مر كالسهم ووافى غيره

فشربنا الصاب بعد العسل

It sped like an arrow, and another arrived,

So we drank bitter sap after honey.

هيجت ذكراه قلبي مثلما

هيج الصب نواح البلبل

Its memory stirred my heart, just as

The nightingale's lament stirred the lovesick lover.

لم أزل أشعر بالوجد الذي

أشعلته نار تلك القبل

I still feel the longing that

The fire of those kisses kindled.

كل ما نهواه يمضى عاجلا

ليته يمشي بنا في مهل

Everything we love passes swiftly;

If only it would move with us at a leisurely pace!

كل شيء حائل عن شكله

تلك فينا سنة للأزل

Everything changes its form;

Such is eternity's law among us.

سلب الدهر هنائي إنني

لفعال الدهر لم أمتثل

Time has robbed me of my happiness; indeed, I

Have not yielded to the deeds of time.

عقني الاخوان إذ قد جهلوا

أنني عن غيهم في شغل

My brethren were disloyal to me, since they did not know

That I am too occupied to heed their waywardness.

أأقضي العمر أرجو ودهم

بين عذر منهم أو عذل

Shall I spend my life hoping for their affection,

Amid excuses from them or reproaches?

أنا بين الناس طير صادح

نائح في عرصات الطلل

I am a singing bird among people,

Lamenting in the courtyards of the ruined dwelling.

أنا ذاك الليث لا تغضبه

وثبات الذئب وقت الكلل

I am that lion, not angered by

The wolf's leaps in a time of weariness.

إيه يا دنيا أما من ساعة

ألتقي فيها بنور الأمل

Ah, O world, is there not an hour

In which I meet the light of hope?

أودع التعس حياتي صحفاً

خطها من أدمعي المنهمل

Misery placed pages in my life,

Inscribed by the streaming flow of my tears.

أبنو الدنيا هم الأوهام أم

أنا فيهم لم أكن بالرجل

Are the sons of the world illusions, or

Was I not a man among them?

هاكم السعد بهم متصل

وبمثلى بعد لم يتصل

Behold, good fortune is joined to them,

And it has not yet joined with one like me.

راحة الانسان من كد ومن

نصب يوم انقضاء الأجل

Humankind's rest from toil and from

Weariness comes on the day life's allotted span ends.
