    My beloved, we are a people unchanged

    by time's vicissitudes; if it turns against them, they endure.

    سيان ان ملكوا الدنيا أو افتقروا

    They lived under oppression, free and noble;

    whether they possessed the world or were poor, it was all the same.

    They pay no heed to a man of violent might who opposes them,

    coming upon their homes while night is thick with darkness.

    ما خانهم في النزال القلب والبصر

    They defend their honor in every battle;

    neither heart nor sight has failed them in combat.

    والحب عندهم يحلو به العمر

    Glory is their guide, and honesty their nature;

    and love, for them, makes life sweet.

    How, then, could we break a pledge of love to you,

    and how could we turn away from her, when loving her is fate?

    And love, if separation and resentment stir it,

    is fire that leaves nothing and spares nothing.

    يغشيه دمع على الخدين ينهمر

    My beloved, sorrow lies hidden in my heart;

    tears veil it, streaming down both cheeks.

    وكيف اسلو وما لي عنك مصطبر

    Indeed, by your Lord, I shall never forget love;

    and how could I forget, when I cannot endure being apart from you?

    If you deny my eyes' sleeplessness in love, when

    darkness falls, the stars know the story.

    If I compose verse about you spontaneously,

    then it is my heart's inspiration, come to offer an apology.

    To you I send my verses, which have spoken

    of what hopes and thoughts conceal.

    قلب يحبك ما في صفوه كدر

    Do not judge me by the slanderers' words; I have

    a heart that loves you, with no murk in its clarity;

    a heart tossed about by sorrows that rob it

    of its clarity, while hopes within it lie dying.

    Were I to brave life's terrors for your sake,

    it is for love of beautiful women that danger is braved.

    أودى به الهجر والتبريح والذكر

    I once had a fully formed hope in life;

    estrangement, torment, and remembrance destroyed it.

    Grant forgiveness that restores the soul to my body

    after death—for forgiveness is awaited from you.
