    I said to dawn, as the garden's blossoms breathed fragrance

    and night withdrew from morning's face:

    ليس لي فجر للعيش طماح

    O dawn, I am broken-winged;

    O dawn, I have no yearning to live.

    I had thought sorrow a cup containing wine,

    after I laid down my arms in love.

    Dawn answered with the plain truth:

    Do not prolong your complaint about those wounds.

    فشقاء الناس في الحب مباح

    Be sorrow's companion, and renew your lament;

    for people's suffering in love is permitted.

    I said to morning, while morning smiled on me,

    and pain's fang had bitten my heart,

    and my eyes had not slept for love of her,

    and my tears flowed as the steady rains flow:

    O morning, I am a lover who has done no wrong,

    faithful in love to all that pledges require.

    Morning answered, with love as judge:

    Be captive to the one who has ruled over you.

    Love's child has no refuge with me,

    for people's happiness in love is a dream.

    I said to night, when darkness had arrived,

    and sleep's sovereign came forth to meet the people,

    and the full moon donned the robes of clouds,

    like a smiling face behind the ignoble:

    O night, I am a lover who does not sleep,

    and it is wrong that I should suffer injustice within you.

    Night answered, while the people slept:

    Beauty is not blamed; the lover is blamed.

    فاحتمل بلواك إن عز المرام

    People's desertion in love is no sin;

    so bear your affliction if your goal is hard to attain.

    I said to death, when hope was lost,

    and my patience was spent, yet my appointed hour had not come,

    and I had long known abandonment and reproach,

    and I was denied the honey of those kisses:

    You, O death, are a cure for ailments,

    and I, O death, am a passing shadow.

    Death answered, while the heart obeyed

    love's decree: Tell me, then, what is to be done?

    قد غدا اليأس لذى اليأس أمل

    For despair's child, there is no escape from it;

    despair has become hope for the despairing.
