And leave me to sleep beneath the dust.

In the darkness of graves lies my soul's repose,

And from the light come my misery and torment.

And bury my book of poems in the dust,

Above my heart, filled with afflictions.

    Within it is hidden all that my heart held;

And parting from that book is hard.

It is part of me—shall I die and forget,

In life's darkness, the light of my youth?

And scatter flowers upon it; enough for me

Are the wellsprings of literature in their fragrance.

They are love's messengers, reminding my heart

Of sweet lips endowed with beauty.

We sipped bliss from them, yet

After that, we drank a cup of bitter sap.

Within the skin of the dusty earth, there fall away from me

The stains left in my life by those who are my friends.

She is my mother; I came forth from her a child,

And to her is my return after death.

A kiss from the dust of a tender mother

Is better than kissing one whose saliva is sweet.

And embracing stones in the soil is more fitting

Than embracing friends and loved ones.

Indeed, for me, the dawn of tears is followed,

On the day I shed them, by an evening of gloom.

For one like me, no morning has followed their dawn.

How could it follow for one held captive by affliction?

My advice was wasted, and I lost my hope

In my friends; my reproaches had been wasted before.

Many a friend, whose breast holds every treachery

And deceit, greets you with a warm welcome.

From his eye, as he gazes, there appears

In the darkness of pretense, the blaze of suspicion.
