Abode of love, solace of the solace-seeker,

Will you revive that first passion?

Within you I tasted the cups of serenity

For an age, and lived apart from the world,

Making merry and mocking time and its vicissitudes,

While treachery lay in the folds of time to come.

The unbridled wind whistled through you, perhaps

Lamenting a passion in you that had not changed.

Separation pitched its black tents over you,

And made you drink from its right hand the cup of bitter colocynth.

The raven croaked in your courtyard, which so often

The nightingale's song had gladdened in the night.

And I stand at your door, reflecting

On what has befallen you—does my reflection help?

    يشكو النوى ظمآن لم يتبلل

    Gloom has settled upon the flowers around you;

They lament separation, thirsty and unwatered.

They gaze at me, having briefly [revived],

Bending tenderly toward that approaching phantom.

    And love moans within you, a lover's moan;

You were once, in his eyes, the sweetest home.

And upon you lies a tinge of loved ones' desertion,

Visible to the contemplative poet's eye.

The trees within you sway as though

The intractable sickness of separation were dragging them down.

Flowers have withered; I have not forgotten their beauty,

While love in the folds of my ribs has not withered.

And the water has dried up; once it flowed laughing,

Gushing like the resolve of the dauntless.

I would water you with copious tears, if

Plants could live on the flood of my freely flowing tears.

O chamber of old love, greetings!

Why do I see you so sorrowful to behold?

O chamber of old love, greetings!

Long has a pitch-black night's darkness lingered within you.

Oh, how often you witnessed the finest scenes

Of love, among those embracing and kissing.

Will you not see my anguish and my longing,

Or hear my complaint and my abasement?

Why do I ask you for happiness and bliss,

While the darkness of this house remains unchanged?

Why do I chant reverently at your door

Love's verses, like a monk absorbed in worship?

I weep as an orphan weeps, and there has appeared

From me a portent of ill for the future.

And I yearn for bygone days, repeating

My secret, and frown at the time to come.

And I see—while memory's fire [burns] my heart—

What separation has done to your radiant brow.

    فإذا وهبت لك الحشا فتقبلي

    Indeed, I have dedicated to you the torrent of my tears;

So if I give you my heart, accept it.
