And whoever takes multiple wives without a compelling need

Has indeed inflicted injury or caused harm.

Plural marriage is only a concession; so if

You go to excess in it, you venture into folly and danger.

Whoever diminishes his first wife's rights for a second

Will find no pardon from his Lord when he pleads an excuse.

And in plural marriage, if you grasp its wisdom,

Are kindness, mercy, and mending for the one who is broken.

Who is there to protect the beautiful divorced woman,

And for spinsters who wear away their lives in discontent,

And for widows whom sorrows squeeze?

And grief ravages branches if it squeezes them.

And who is there for the orphans' mother? Will she be lost to them,

With the edge pressed and the figure bent? [Wording unclear.]

And what covering is there for her who has stumbled and is assailed

By a specter of scandal that sends out warnings?

And what is the path to noble offspring

If you are the husband of an infertile woman whose fortune has stumbled?

It is plural marriage—how often it has sheltered the orphan and those—

—like the orphan; how often it has comforted, how often shielded!

It is the lawful that banishes the unlawful; and how often

It has protected a woman from indecency, or protected a man!

Take multiple wives if you can, but be just and tactful.

Do not lend desire an ear or an eye.

And govern your subjects with true love; you will find

Your home complaining of neither jealousy nor reversals of fortune.

Do not fear poverty; how many a family has had its fill

Of honor and wealth, while a lone man failed and grew poor.
