You departed and left your companions weeping

For you—they who used to sing in rhyme!

    فَمَنْ ذا الذي يَسْقي ويَرْوِي الصَّواديا؟!

    They were, and still are, thirsting for you;

Who, then, will give drink and quench the thirsty?

And who will satisfy all the townsfolk,

And who, after you, will satisfy the desert dwellers?

    وما كنْتَ في دُنْيا المشاعِر غافيا!

    You were awake in the world of feeling;

You were never asleep in the world of feeling.

You were the front-runner in the race, and I

Shall be the runner-up, wherever I dwell.

We were like two branches, our great tree towering

In a verdant garden that had never withered.

Until death's herald called, striking terror,

And you answered—how cruel, how tender the caller!

And soon I shall answer him and turn back

To you, like two stars that vanished at dawn.

    فما كنْتَ مِهذاراً ولا كنتَ لاهِياَ

    O master of flawless rhymes, you have become immortal;

For you were neither a babbler nor a trifler.

Rather, it was earnestness that ennobled

Your meanings, until they bestowed exalted rank upon you.

You traversed the peaks until you scaled their highest crest,

While they roamed barren slopes and wastelands.

When a true genius departs, ever higher rise

His glorious deeds among humankind, year after year.

Others departed before him, then after him,

And they were but floating bubbles upon a drink.

You were like a star that shines forever,

Bringing joy to our days and nights.

Unique among men, you were honored as a leader,

With a mind that, when it shone forth, lit the dark nights.

    Unruly poetry surrendered its reins

To you, and what in it was distant drew near.

Some verse defeats us, yet it takes shape

Obediently before you, in letters and meanings.

From it you choose whatever poems you wish,

Delighting our hearts and making our eyes shed tears.

And you were [not] barren, nor were you spent,

As they claimed; rather, you flowed like a river.

But you chose silence, holding yourself above

The babbling frivolity put forth by hack poets.

If only you had not fallen silent! For how

Can a nightingale be silent? Silence may make the ribs bleed.

Indeed, with its mellow song it brought healing,

And through that song was a star guiding the way.

May He who favored you watch over you; you were not

Ungrateful, and so you bestowed cherished hopes.

How far apart are the earth, lying low,

    And the Pleiades—lowliness and exaltation!

I remembered the affection that united us,

So dear, and remembered no hatred or estrangement.

How could I? You never turned away from guidance

Or glory, not for a day; thus you discerned hidden things.

Nor was I ever so; thus we lived in brotherhood,

Noble and inspiring our hopes, and lived in sincere affection.

I never expected you to depart while I remained

In my dwelling, grieving, tearful-eyed, lamenting.

But this is fate's decree, and we have

No helper but patience, no healer but patience.

It tells me that I shall meet you tomorrow,

And both of us shall receive grace and favors.

And we shall receive pardon from God, the Generous,

And find Him all-merciful, and find Him pleased.

Blessed are You, my Lord! How sublime You are, tender

Toward us, though we are wayward, savage creatures!
