I was enraptured by the enlightened al-Arfaj,

by verse that appeared like a moonbeam!

Like the clarity of a pool, like a canary's song,

like the sweetness of fruit, like the fragrance of flowers!

So I said to him: how sublime poetry is

when it captivates us with these radiant verses!

It seemed to me just like a dewy cloud,

    lavishing sweet rain upon us!

And poetry is nothing but an outpouring of feeling,

    sustained by lofty thoughts!

Its burden has indeed weighed me down in life,

    yet its fruit was sweet!

So I set out to roam the towering peaks,

and give thanks for my coming to its waters and my return!

And I ask the star about what became clear

and had been hidden, and about what stayed concealed!

So it tells me: what a harvest this is,

and what wondrous visions and suras!

Blessed be the giver of this feeling,

who fashions precious pearls for us,

and gives sweet water to drink and quenches the thirsty:

what fine sweet water, and what a fine river!

And none attained it but a few among humankind,

and they were giants among people!

And they were the nobles, and they were the guides,

and they were its singers before dawn!

I see myself devoted to it, taking pride

in my wakefulness through it, and my vigilance!

So, O goddess of poetry, I am full of passion,

and I am the canary among the trees.

I am enamored of your adorned gardens,

as I am of the heat of Saqar's blaze!
