فالأمـانيfor hopes منـكfrom you حسبـيenough for me
Caress my heart with a dream,
Caress my heart within a dream,
For hopes from you are enough for me.
For wishes from you are enough for me.

راضِياًcontent اختــرتُI chose دربـيmy path
Despite what you hide from me,
Despite what you hide from me,
Content, I chose my path,
Willingly, I have chosen my path,
بيـنamong أشـواكٍthorns ووردٍand roses
ومَـلامٍand blame بعـدafter عَتْـــبِreproach
Among thorns and roses,
Amidst thorns and roses,
And blame after reproach.
And blame following reproach.
مالكيmy master،ياقيـدَO fetter روحيmy soul
فيـكfor you أهـوىI love كلَّevery صَعْبِhardship
My master, O fetter of my soul,
My possessor, O shackle of my soul,
For you, I love every hardship.
In you, I adore every hardship.
إنَّindeed شـوقيmy longing قدalready بَـرَانيhas worn me away
هلdoes…? لشوقيfor my longing بعضُa share of كربـيmy anguish؟
Indeed, my longing has worn me away.
Indeed, my longing has consumed me;
Does my longing have a share of my anguish?
Does my longing hold a share of my anguish?
فالهـوىfor love عنديto me شعورa feeling
فاقsurpassed أشـهىthe most delectable كلِّall عَـذْبِsweet things
For love, to me, is a feeling
For love, to me, is a feeling
That surpasses the most delectable of all sweet things.
That surpasses the sweetest of all delights.
أنتِyou لُغْـزٌa mystery فيin حـياتيmy life
فيamong المآسـيtragedies ، أيُّwhat ضـرْبِkind؟
You are a mystery in my life—
You are an enigma in my life;
Among tragedies, what kind are you?
Among tragedies, what kind are you?
لاdo not تلـوميblame فيfor غـراميmy passion
رَفَّfluttered قلبـيmy heart، ذاكthat ذنبـيmy sin
Do not blame me for my passion;
Do not blame me for my passion,
My heart fluttered—that is my sin.
My heart fluttered, and that is my sin.

بعدمـاafter أنكـرتِyou denied صَبّـيmy ardor
A lover, perishing, struck down,
A lover—perishing, struck down—
After you denied my ardor.
After you denied my intense infatuation.

فيin خـياليmy imagination، أنتِyou قُطْبـيmy axis
When my heart yearns,
Whenever my heart yearns,
In my imagination, you are my axis.
In my imagination, you are my guiding star.
منfrom ذهـوليmy bewilderment، منfrom عـذابيmy torment
عنabout شؤونيmy affairs، بِتُّI have come to أُنْبـيI tell
From my bewilderment, from my torment,
Out of my bewilderment, out of my torment,
Concerning my affairs, I have come to tell
I began to speak of my condition
كـلَّevery خِـلٍّclose friend، عـنabout دواءٍa remedy
منfrom طبيبٍa doctor، لاnot يُـلَـبّيresponds
Every close friend about a remedy
To every close friend, seeking a cure
From a doctor who does not respond.
From a physician who does not respond.
عاجـزٌunable عنto كَفِّholding back دمعيmy tears
فمـتىso when ينـزاحُlifts كربـيmy anguish؟
Unable to hold back my tears,
Powerless to hold back my tears,
So when will my anguish lift?
So when will my anguish be lifted?
عيلَwas exhausted صبريmy patience،قيلَwas told سِـرِّيmy secret
قَـلَّdwindled عَوْنيmy support،جَلَّgrew grave خَطْـبيmy plight
My patience is spent; my secret has been told.
My patience is exhausted, my secret revealed,
My support has dwindled; my plight has grown grave.
My aid is scarce, my affliction immense.
رَقَّgrew tender قـلبيmy heart،سَحَّpoured down دمـعيmy tears
صـاحَcried out عـقليmy mind:لاdo not تُلَبّيrespond
My heart grew tender; my tears poured down.
My heart softened, my tears poured forth,
My mind cried out: Do not respond!
Yet my mind cried out: "Do not yield!"
كُنْbe حكيماًwise،عِـشْlive كريماًwith dignity
وابـتعدْand stay away عنfrom أيِّany رَيْـبِdoubt
Be wise; live with dignity,
"Be wise, live with dignity,
And stay away from any doubt.
And distance yourself from any doubt."
إنَّـنيindeed I am شَهْـمٌgallant كـريمٌgenerous
اِسـأليask خصميmy adversary وصـحبيand my companions
Indeed, I am gallant and generous.
Indeed, I am noble and generous;
Ask my adversary and my companions,
Ask my adversary and my companion,
واسأليand ask عنabout حـالِthe state of باليmy mind
بـلْrather مَـآليmy fate حينat the time of نَحْبـيmy death
And ask about my state of mind—
And ask about the state of my mind,
Rather, my fate at my death.
Nay, my destiny upon my death.

So if ever you seek union with me,
So if you desire union with me,
Come, without books.
Come forth, without letters or messages.
طامـعٌlonging فيfor يـومِa day of وَصْلٍunion
لاnot يُحـاكيresembles يومa day of َ غَيْبِabsence
I long for a day of union
Hoping for a day of union
That does not resemble a day of absence.
That resembles no day of absence.
واجْنَحيand incline للسِّلْمِtoward peace دَوْماًalways
وانْعَمـيand take delight حـيناًfor a while بقربـيin being near me.
And incline always toward peace,
And incline towards peace always,
And take delight for a while in being near me.
And find bliss, for a time, in my nearness.
