    You, O my eye, have made me ill,

    By gazing longingly toward women in curtained chambers—

    وُضَّحِ اللونِ رُجَّح الأكفالِ

    Soft, pampered, beautiful,

    Fair of complexion, heavy of haunches;

    رائقٍ فائقٍ غريبِ المِثالِ

    And toward every woman of delightful beauty,

    Pleasing, outstanding, rare in its kind;

    مِنْ بناء مُشَيّدٍ مُتعالِي

    And toward every towering, lofty structure,

    Of solidly built, soaring construction;

    And toward the splendor of gardens, with palms,

    And their trees, and the coolness of shade.

    إنما القلبُ جَدّ في إرْسالِي

    The eye said, “That is not from me;

    The heart alone was intent on sending me.”

    I said, “O heart, you unleashed my eye

    To graze in the meadows of a woman in curtained chambers.”

    My heart said, “The ears have already informed me

    Of what they heard and passed on.”

    I said to the ear, “How do you listen to the sound

    Of a figure with plump shins?

    Then they carry it to the heart, until

    It is left in choking distress and cares.”

    فهو سلطانُنا بغير جِدَالِ

    It said, “The heart is master of every limb;

    It is our sovereign, beyond dispute.

    So whenever it wishes to manage a matter,

    Every limb obeys it in action.”

    Then we turned to the heart for a while and said,

    “You—you are the pivot in every circumstance.”

    لَستُ أدْرِي فِعلا من الأفْعَالِ

    It said, “I am veiled from everything;

    I know nothing of any deed

    At all. Do you not hear? An ear and an eye

    Tell me of women and men.

    Every limb brings me a matter,

    So I grew bewildered amid great preoccupation.”

    Blame and contention arose from this one

    And that one, and the dispute grew fierce.

    It was said, “There must indeed be a judge to rule

    Between the disputants by their statements.”

    فهو العدلُ صادقاً في المَقَالِ

    It was said, “Then the body is judge, and it is just;

    It is the just one, truthful in speech.”

    My body said, “If my word is accepted,

    I shall speak truth between you, unconcerned.”

    It said, “All of you have joined forces, one and all,

    In every falsehood and error.

    So I became ill through your adornment, throughout

    My life, shackled in derangement.

    إن صلحْتُم يوماً فيصلحُ حالِي

    So fear God, O my loved ones, all of you;

    If you become sound one day, my condition will improve.

    إنْ عَدَلْتم فإنني في اعتدالِ

    So be upright throughout your lifetime; do not stray;

    If you act justly, then I am in balance.”
