رحلتُم والمدامعُ في انسكاب

وقلبي من هواكم في اكتئابِ

You departed while tears poured down.

You left and tears were flowing

And my heart is sorrowful from loving you.

My heart in sorrow for your love

وجسمي من صُدُودكمُ نحيلٌ

وجسمي من صُدُودكمُ نحيلٌ

فهلاّ من رجوع أو إيابِ

فهلاّ من رجوع أو إيابِ

And my body is thin from your rejection.

My body gaunt from your rejection

Then will there be no turning back or return?

Why not return or come again?

فإن كنتم عزمتم لارتحال

فإن كنتم عزمتم لارتحال

فقولى عَلّنى أشرحْ لما بي

فقولى عَلّنى أشرحْ لما بي

So if you have resolved to depart,

If you've decided to depart

Speak, then; perhaps I may explain what ails me.

Tell me openly what ails you

عساكم ترحمونَ قتيل شوق

عساكم ترحمونَ قتيل شوق

وأعرف عنكمُ ردَّ الجوابِ

وأعرف عنكمُ ردَّ الجوابِ

Perhaps you will pity one slain by longing,

Perhaps you'll pity one lovesick

And I may learn your reply.

And favor me with an answer

إلى كم أرتجى منكم وصالا

إلى كم أرتجى منكم وصالا

قريبا أم إلى يوم الحسابِ

قريبا أم إلى يوم الحسابِ

How long shall I hope for union with you—

How long do I hope for union

Soon, or until the Day of Reckoning?

Soon or till Judgment Day?

وأُخبرَكم بأنى مُستهامٌ

وأُخبرَكم بأنى مُستهامٌ

حزينُ القلبِ منكم يا صِحابي

حزينُ القلبِ منكم يا صِحابي

And I tell you that I am mad with love,

Let me tell you I'm confounded

Sorrowful at heart because of you, O my companions.

Heart grieved, O dear friends of mine

فإن كان اللقاءُ لنا قريباً

فإن كان اللقاءُ لنا قريباً

وإلا قد غنيتُ من العِتابِ

وإلا قد غنيتُ من العِتابِ

So if our meeting is near—

If we shall meet again soon

And if not, I have already dispensed with reproach.

If not, I've had enough reproach

أما تدرن أنِّي من هواكم

أما تدرن أنِّي من هواكم

أُكابِدُ لوعةً وكذاك دابي

أُكابِدُ لوعةً وكذاك دابي

Do you not know that I, through love for you,

Don't you know that I, for love of you

Endure burning anguish, and such is my wont?

Suffer agony, and so does my beast

فما وقفوا ولا رَقُّوا لصَبْر

فما وقفوا ولا رَقُّوا لصَبْر

ولا رفعوا ولا سمعوا صوابي

ولا رفعوا ولا سمعوا صوابي

Yet they neither stopped nor felt pity for endurance,

But they did not pause or soften

Nor did they lift, nor hear my words of reason.

Nor heed the rightness of my words

وجَدُّوا في المسير وخَلّفوني

وجَدُّوا في المسير وخَلّفوني

أُقَلِّبُ جبهتي فوق الترابِ

أُقَلِّبُ جبهتي فوق الترابِ

And they pressed on with their journey and left me behind,

They hurried on their way, leaving me

Turning my forehead upon the dust.

Tossing my face into the dust

وأجرى الدمعَ من شوقي إليهم

وأجرى الدمعَ من شوقي إليهم

كما تجرى السيولُ من السحاب

كما تجرى السيولُ من السحاب

And I let tears flow from my longing for them,

And the tears of longing for them

As torrents flow from the clouds.

Flowed as floods flow from the clouds

أبيتُ أَردِّدُ الزفراتِ شوقا

أبيتُ أَردِّدُ الزفراتِ شوقا

وقلبي من نواهم في التهابِ

وقلبي من نواهم في التهابِ

I spend the night repeating sighs in longing,

I spent the night sighing in yearning

And my heart is aflame because they are far away.

My heart inflamed with their intention

إليهم منهمُ ولهم عليهم

إليهم منهمُ ولهم عليهم

فما لي من سواهم من طِلابِ

فما لي من سواهم من طِلابِ

To them, from them, and for them, upon them—

For them, from them, by them

So I seek no one besides them.

None but them I seek

أُسائل عنهمُ من كل أرض

أُسائل عنهمُ من كل أرض

إلى أن غابَ مِن جسمى شبابي

إلى أن غابَ مِن جسمى شبابي

I seek news of them from every land,

Of every land I ask after them

Until my youth vanished from my body.

Until youth left my body
