You are the chosen beloved, and yours is bliss;
You are the beloved, the chosen one, and for you is praise
and I am the afflicted lover, and mine is suffering.
While I am the loving one, afflicted, and for me is grief

You are the wealthy one, never to be seen humbled;
You are rich, and never will you see one more humble
and I am poverty itself, yet cannot do without you.
While I am poor, and I have no wealth except through you

You alone among God's creatures have an abundant share
For you, apart from all of God's creation, is abundant fortune
of me; from you I have sorrow and wasting sickness.
While for me from you is sorrow and affliction

Not fearing any punishment from our Lord

You left one sick at heart, turning his face [reading uncertain],
You left the heartache of my innermost being, heading
in Tihamah, while you settled in the valley of Mina.
To Tihama, settling in the valley of Mina

You did not permit me to ask how you have been after us

What have I done to deserve your coldness?
What wrong did I commit to deserve your coldness?
Who among the talebearers has altered our bond?
Who of the slanderers has changed our bond?

If your servant has committed any lapse,
If your servant committed a slip,
he is repentant, if indeed he has committed a sin.
He now repents if he has gathered sins

Have mercy on one who has spent his days and nights
changes through loving you since separation.
Loving you, with a changing complexion

A visit, then say "perhaps" we might

Perhaps he may live on a consoling pretext from you,
So perhaps with an excuse from you he may live
and what I have suffered from you may become easy to bear.
And that which I suffered from you becomes easy

Were it not for your image and the memory of trysts
at al-Munhana and al-Raqmayn, he would find no delight.
In the twisting road and the two signs, he would not have become lovesick

Love is sweet to the taste at first;
Verily, love is sweet when first tasted
but when it takes control, you think its fruit bitter.
But when it takes control, it becomes bitter fate

Minds and souls would almost have faded away,
Intellects almost lose their minds, and selves
had breezes from your dwellings not passed over us.
Were it not for the winds of your lands that passed by us

Behold, then look, on the day I fell in love with you,
So look one day how I have clung in love of you
at what longing makes of my condition.
See my state of longing, how it has become

Passion passed over all created beings;
Love has passed all people
it passed them by, but seeing me, went deeper.
But lingered when it saw me and deeply settled

It then made the hearts its dwelling
what defense have I, once it claimed them as its home?
I have no argument for its claims of my heart as its dwelling

If it denies, I will reject its claims as untrue
my tears, upright witnesses, testify: 'Your secret is with us.'
The witnesses of my tears prove your secret within me

The cause of the bond was a glance at their beauty
it took firm hold when I turned my eyes.
So it took hold when I turned my eyes

Have exposed myself to shame, assuredly

Thus I became infatuated with that one, confused
I who before had been myself—my very self.
When I had been, before, myself

So until when will I waste my time in infatuation
and dwell among mankind in abject need?
Remaining between the two abodes, clinging?

since with him I have enjoyed happiness and wealth.
Since I was with it in good fortune and wealth
