So never think that distance erases my affection for you.

Yet this longing has come to overpower me.

And I am not one to forget people's virtues,

Even if, through distance, they muddy the clear waters I drink.

And my pledge of old endures through time, even if

Sorrow comes upon me from every side.

For my affection clings more firmly than a dove's neck-ring,

And its mark is more lasting than the creases of the finger joints.

Nor am I among those who, when far away goes

Their true friend, betray a companion's affection.

Nor am I one who, if a friend should err, would be

Lying in wait for him as he walks a keen sword's edge.

I am a man whose neighbor suffers no wrong, nor am I

One to expose the hidden faults of a loyal, close companion.

Listen, O faithful sheikh, who has become

For us the best of companions, and the best of our kin.

Indeed, you have again, O one worthy of regard, sent

A gentle reproach with a reproving friend,

For our delay in returning a reply to you,

And our past neglect of the custom of banquets.

Yes, we have indeed fallen short, and you

Forgive the repeated missteps of one who repents.

And we have no excuse, but your forbearance

Tells us that every fault will be covered.

    وطُلْ واحتمِلْ واغفِرْ وناصح لآيبِ

    So make peace, be lenient, pardon, overlook, lead, and be generous;

And bestow favors, be forbearing, forgive, and counsel one who returns.

My greeting of peace be upon you at every moment and hour,

Whenever lightning gleams among the clouds,

And whenever a longing soul yearns, and whenever a bird laments,

And whenever white, purebred camels travel with a rider.
