إناindeed we لفيindeed in شُغُلٍpreoccupation وإنكand you تَعلمُknow
O Muhammad, son of Muhammad, son of al-Murtada,
O Muhammad son of Muhammad son of al-Murtada
we are indeed preoccupied, and you know it.
We are indeed preoccupied, and you know
لعبtoyed الأسَىsorrow بقلوبناwith our hearts وعُقُولِناand our minds
لماwhen سمعناwe heard أنّكthat you المتألّمُthe one in pain
Sorrow toyed with our hearts and minds
Sorrow plays with our hearts and minds
when we heard that you were in pain.
When we heard you were in pain
لوif تقبلwould accept الحمىfever فدىًa ransom أوor رشوةًa bribe
لتكفَّto halt عنكfrom you نزولهاits descent فَتُسَلِّمُso you would pay
If fever would accept a ransom or a bribe
If fever would accept ransom or bribe
to halt its descent upon you, then you would pay.
To stop afflicting you and let you be well
لكنهاbut it إنif سلطتْtakes hold يحُلوis sweet لهاto it
فيin أيّany جسمٍbody ماwhat يقولُsays المُسْلِمُthe Muslim
But if it takes hold, it finds sweet
But if it prevails, it is sweet to it
what the Muslim says, in any body.
In whichever body, as the resigned Muslim says
لماwhen تألَّمْتُمْyou all suffered شغلناwe were preoccupied كلُّناall of us
كِدْناwe nearly منbecause of الأشغالِpreoccupations لاnot نتكلمُwe speak
When you suffered, we were all preoccupied;
When you were in pain, we were all busy
we could scarcely speak for all our cares.
Almost overwhelmed with chores, unable to talk
وتحيرتْand were bewildered أفكارُناour thoughts وعقولُناand our minds
طوبَىblessedness لمنfor whoever نُودِىwas called ولاand does not يتظلَّمُcomplain of injustice
And our thoughts and minds were bewildered.
And our thoughts and minds were confused
Blessed is whoever is called and does not complain.
Blessed is he who is called yet does not complain
لكنْbut قضاءَdecree اللهGod's فيناconcerning us سابقٌpreordained
لاneither عالمa scholar يُجْدىhelps ولاnor مُتَعَلَّمُa learner
Yet God's decree for us is preordained;
But God's decree over us comes first
neither a scholar nor a learner can help.
No scholar can be of help, nor can the learned
أنتyou الحكيمthe sage ولاand not نزيدُكwe add to you حكمةًwisdom
فوقbeyond الذيwhat تجزىyou are recompensed وأنتَand you are معَلَّمُwell taught
You are the sage, and we add no wisdom to yours
You are wise, and we cannot increase your wisdom
beyond what you receive in recompense, and you are well taught.
Beyond what you deserve, being the learned
