May God reunite us after separation,

and with that may cherished days return,

and days of an age that once held us together,

so that a pledge may be fulfilled for us after parting.

And may the coming nights restore what

has passed—nights whose edge was blunt.

Such is the way of the world: union and separation,

and grief, and sometimes loss, sometimes wholeness.

And they said, “Hold fast to the cords of consolation.”

But how, when consolation’s cords are reins?

So morning finds us without gracious patience, grieving

over you, and evening finds us with tears streaming.

And what fault lies with one who sees no father, if

he remains despondent—or is he to be blamed?

And what blame is ours if we kill ourselves,

when the one we love is beyond reach, and our goal is hard to attain?
