    Love those of reason among your subjects,

    without delay, and be an attentive listener to them.

    تكن في كلّ مرتبةٍ رفيعا

    And be ahead of them in every matter;

    you will be exalted in every rank.

    وشَاورْهم تكن حصنا منيعَا

    And do not grow angry, for you are the chief of a people;

    and consult them: you will be an impregnable fortress.

    And if they call upon you in great calamity, answer them

    without delay, and be their intercessor.

    And if haste seems called for in a matter,

    then hasten it quickly, without delay.

    And if delaying a matter seems better,

    then postpone it, and be firm in holding it back.

    And guard your secret even from those of understanding—

    how much more from one who would divulge it!

    And if a loving friend entrusts you with a secret,

    then bury it, and beware lest it slip out.

    وإن أخفيتَ أرضيتَ الجميعَا

    For if you disclose it, evil will rage among them;

    and if you conceal it, you will please them all.

    So do not let sweet tongues deceive you:

    behind them they mix deadly poison.

    ومن والاكَ والِ المستطيعَا

    And if your enemy treats you gently, be gentle in return;

    and befriend the capable one who befriends you.

    And if you become angry with someone, forgive

    him his lapses, and you will be obedient.
