    إذاً وفؤادي بالكآبة مُولَعُ

    Leave me be, for my eye's tears will not cease;

and so my heart is consumed by melancholy.

I have a burning liver that melts, as though

upon a mass of molten metal, ceaselessly breaking apart.

    مدى الدهرِ لا يَرْفها لها قطُّ مَدْمَعُ

    And my eye's lids are sore from weeping;

through all time, their tears never once abate.

And a heart hostile to consolation—how could it be otherwise,

when generosity's abode lies forsaken, a barren waste,

at the death of him through whom every ignorant soul sought guidance

and became an obedient ally of guidance?

He is Shaykh ʿAbd Allah, offspring of Muhammad,

a scion of ʿAli, that noble, eloquent orator.

My life for that man without likeness or equal, who had no

path in religion and worldly life save renunciation.

    فهلْ إلى رؤيا محيَّاهُ مَرْجِعُ

    My life for a generous man whose return is not—not—to be hoped for;

is there, then, a way back to seeing his face?

For before your burial in the earth, I never knew—

nor imagined—that the sun could be laid in a grave.

For every bereavement among humankind is a tragedy,

but when it strikes the noblest of creation, it is more grievous.

And every death that descends is appalling,

but when it strikes the most honorable of creation, it is more appalling.

And every calamity is inevitably painful,

and if it strikes the best of creation, more painful still.

As they quoted a verse from long ago,

which we heard attributed to a scholar long departed:

And every eclipse among the brilliant stars is dreadful,

but in the sun and full moon it is more dreadful.

Can this world, after you, be sweet to anyone of sense?

How could it, when the spring dwelling is bereft of your presence?

And how can life be sweet to humankind after you,

while you are wrapped in garments of dust?

Alas for my soul's grief after your death, my master!

And ah, my heart's burning—the aching never ceases!

Who after you will stand for piety, religion, and guidance,

and who will champion bounty, generosity, and virtue?

May your grave, cheered by light and guidance,

by knowledge and piety, be watered by pouring clouds,

with lingering, copious rain, its heavy downpour unceasing,

as tears from my eyelids have showered it.

And a calamity—the earth almost quakes in fear

before it, and the peaks of the firmly rooted mountains split apart!

Oh, what a calamity, crippling every other affliction,

so that before it every calamity is itself bereaved!

    It has engulfed the earth's people in sorrow and anguish;

who, then, has reached evening without grieving?

No wonder, then, I sent flowing along my tears' course

fresh blood, now that the valiant saint has died.

Nor is it strange that I have become sorrow's sworn companion, since

the beloved who bade farewell has now gone far from me.

Nor is it strange if sorrow burns my lifeblood,

when I have no hope of meeting you.

But strange it would be if I smiled in laughter,

consoled, when I have no open road to your return.

O distant one, cool my breast with a glance,

for I am content with the slightest glance from you.

And ask a heart that I have long beheld,

now grown sick, distraught with longing and in pain.

May the All-Merciful lodge him in His holy presence,

so he may revel in a garden of fragrant herbs.
