Indeed, my eye said to my heart: You have kept me occupied.

It answered: Rather, you distract me with your glances.

    ولولاكَ لم أصبو لنلْكَ المنازلِ

    You looked and kindled passion in my lifeblood;

but for you, I would not yearn for those dwellings.

It said to it: You are the one who stirs desire,

and so you sent me to gaze at everything of worth.

For you are sovereign over all the bodily members

of the body; so, my master, guard every worker.

It answered: Had you not been looking,

I would not have become sorrowful, a companion to cares.

    بنَثْتُم لنا الأخبارَ عَنْ كلِّ نازلِ

    For you and the ears are scouts for the heart;

you relayed to us news of every new arrival.

The ears said to it: Rather, you are the one who sends us,

and but for you, we would not listen to any speaker's words.

Then my heart said to them: If I am a ruler,

abiding in those strongholds, never departing,

how can I learn the news that

tells us about the affairs of Zayd and Wa'il?

And I know no news except through your report,

and but for you, no doer's deed would reach me.

Then it said to them: You have wearied me; all of you

are alike—you have joined forces in every falsehood.

But for you, I would not lie in bed at evening,

stricken with lovesickness between the protected grounds and the thickets.

Take heed: fear God, who unites us,

and do not leave me lying in trackless wastes.
