If a man delays in a promise and a pledge,

with no excuse or occupation to detain him, blame him.

But if his delay comes from some cause that arose—

the illness of a loved one or the illness of a kinsman,

or pain and wasting sickness that assailed his body—

then pardon from a praiseworthy man is more fitting for the sick.

But one who chooses sheer delay, turning away,

    without excuse, occupation, or pain—

that man is shunned, and never is there accepted from him

a spoken excuse, unlike the rest of humankind.

By God—a righteous, truthful, pious man's oath—

I have not betrayed my pledge or falsified my words.

Nor did I linger in delay, turning away

from you and your two witnesses: my speech and my mouth.

But if you know something other than this—

I would ransom you—such a lofty beacon, such wisdom!—

or if I have harbored words other than those spoken

by my tongue—my heart's blood and mouth come from you—

suppose I stumbled: your pardon mends me,

and forgiveness erases the minor sins I commit.

In bygone days, a guiding saying was spoken:

Even the sharp, cleaving sword cannot escape a missed stroke,

nor can the jurist whose character is good

escape a lapse that arises and leads to remorse.

Pardon, forbearance, and forgiveness for an offender!

Without overlooking faults, no offender would be forgiven.

Even if I filled nearly the whole earth with faults,

I am certain you would erase them without tiring.

Nor do I think the daughters of Time will pelt me

with arrows from the bows of misery and vengeance.

And I had secretly thought that poverty would accompany me,

when your speech was never generous with 'no' and 'not.'

As though 'no' were forbidden ground among you,

when asked, you knew nothing but 'yes.'

O fulfiller of promises, O reviver of generosity, and O

lamp of our faith, O master of nations!

O son of Sultan Sayf, son of his sovereign,

Bal'arab of bounty, faithful to pledges and covenants!

Show kindness to one who came hoping for your forgiveness

for all his right hand has committed, in remorse.

May none who hopes for your pardon and forgiveness be disappointed,

like one who looks to you for bounty and generosity.

Indeed, I have clung to a cord that cannot break,

of love for you and affection that never ends.

    وانْعَم وجدْ وابتهجْ واحلمْ بنا ودُم

    So live forever, unharmed, in life that has no end;

and live in ease, give freely, rejoice, be forbearing with us, and endure.
