And mind yourself; find fault with no one, nor

approve of harshness, though they call you foolish and rebuke you.

sullen; may whoever acts gently never come to grief.

Overlook their faults; do not count their sins,

even if they make too much of your misdeeds.

If you tally their deeds and repay them,

they will hate you, overpower you, and spread rumors.

    Greet the enemy with a gentle greeting;

surely a gentle person escapes harm.

Abandon ostentation, conceit, arrogance, and grudges,

    and rancor, O self-restrained one.

You will be safe from afflictions and harm from

all humankind; follow what they put forward.

Forsake excess in speech and other things,

whether food or clothing, in all their forms.

    وبتركه تحيي الحياةَ وتشرُفُ

    Excess deadens the hearts of humankind;

by abandoning it, you enliven life and gain honor.

And when you choose a true and righteous friend,

and know goodness in him—you know best—

do not heed an accuser's allegation against him,

even if talebearers circulate stories about him to excess.

Do not cast him off without clear proof,

if you possess forbearance and are among those who understand.

For perhaps they envy you, or envy you for having him,

so they fabricate lies against him and stir up anger.

And perhaps they disparage a pious, righteous man,

though he is honored and ennobled by learning.

But for good fortune and a spiteful talebearer's words

arising from their plotting, Joseph would not have suffered punishment.

He remained seven years in prison, and in

the dreadful well—should one like him be hurled there?

Yet he was the sincere prophet, calling people to

good deeds; the Merciful, the Most Compassionate, delivered him.

Likewise, through their slander, the Mother of the Believers

was assailed by calamity; they showed no restraint.

Likewise Ibn Muqla: they severed his fingers

in an ordeal, though he was innocent and most learned.

How many, how many—and how many a scholar and teacher,

like one of Moses' stock—they branded him foolish and spoke basely.

By what means did they cast him down from the heights,

where triumph lies, so that the barren plain engulfed him?

    هذا يدحرجه وهذا بَنْدفُ

    When a vile man fabricates a story, they record it;

this one rolls it along, and that one cards it,

until it becomes yarn, woven with consummate skill.

They admire it, and it is said, 'This is the bordered cloak!'

Who is there who escapes and emerges unscathed

from their faultfinding—even the noblest sage?

Beware: put no trust in an envier's eye

concerning those who know, and one whose father is the Qur'an.

    واحلُم ودمْ واسلمْ عَداك تخلّفُ

    So look, reflect, take heed, listen, and ask;

be forbearing, persevere, and stay safe—may you never fall behind.

The one who says, 'I am a believer,' is not

truly a believer while arbitrary harshness remains in him,

    until he possesses four qualities,

innate in him, through which his character is revealed.

May no harm befall him; nor can he attain it

through a dispensation, even if he strains himself.

Keeping ties with one who cuts them, pardoning a wrongdoer,

overlooking insults from one who slanders him,

and giving generously to one who is resolute

in hatred; yet he is gentle with whoever sees him.

These qualities are a gift from our Lord

to our guiding Prophet, the self-restrained one.
