And I said to him, 'Meeting you is the finest solace,

if you are cheerful and your shoulders grow supple.

And bring me a draught of your mouth's wine, for it is

    lawful—no bishops have touched it.'

Then he leaned close with a mouth like pearls set in a row,

and generously gave us of what his lips held.

I grew drunk on it—pure, choice wine, whose admixture was

a double measure of finely crushed, fragrant musk.

And when we exchanged verses and our reproaches grew long,

tears flowed, and our fine cloaks could not escape them.

Then I said, with a tear, 'Why this weeping?'

He said, 'I weep for fear of parting from you.'

I said, 'Do you weep both when we meet and when we part?'

He said, 'Both states hold deadly perils.'

I said, 'Then is there any relief?' He told me, 'No

relief do I see, save for one who keeps company.'

    فكيفَ به إذْ كان وهْو مخالِفُ

    Hardships are manifold, even when the beloved is obliging;

how, then, is it with him when he is contrary?

So whoever loves, or is loved, is tormented,

and grief and fears never cease to overtake him.

No one has done us wrong or inflicted harm on us

among humankind, save those we see and befriend.

For I have found distance a blessing for whoever withdraws

from people, or for one whom familiar company has not wearied.

Let us live on the heights of eminence, alone, affirming God's oneness,

solitary, with no caller crying out at your dwelling.

May you behold the Gardens of Eden, keeping company

with the houris there, where the heights enfold you.

And hasten toward good deeds from every direction,

and be prudent, that favors may be bestowed upon you.

And act when, in the course of time, an opportunity comes your way,

for if you do not seize it, you will regret it.
