What has befallen the sun in her lofty heights?

So her face turned yellow after its radiance.

And she appeared sorrowful upon the throne of heaven,

As though lamenting an ailment's bitter pain.

And she descended from her zenith after her elevation,

As though she had collapsed from exhaustion.

And how often she had appeared and erased the darkness of night!

O sun, what have you seen in life?

And I see life abounding in calamities.

In it you bore the greatest burdens,

And, after God, sustained the living.

Did they escort you to burial as they escort their child?

Or did the poets' inspired minds weep for you?

How often you shone, and they met you with their wrath,

And fled from your radiant light.

Yet when they sought you, they ran to you eagerly,

Like an exhausted man to whom you bring water.

O sun, even if you are stricken, you will not

Meet a death whose reaches are unknown.

But I pass through life, and an end comes

To my years; my death is forever dark.

As though I were a wave beside the shores,

That vanished and was lost in the dust of the earth.

O sun, you know your ordeal, which

You taste, while my own ordeal remains obscure.

Is it on the bed of sleep that I shall face death,

    Embodied, with his blue eyes,

Seeking to wrench the soul from my limbs,

While I am pale-faced, worn thin by suffering?

My eye meets him, and tears pour down,

That has baffled thought and judgment.

    Sticks burn within a blaze,

Until, when they subside and death extinguishes them,

I leave a world abundant in blessings.

Or shall I, O sun, be burned by flames

One day, and run with death beside me,

My cries rising, robbed of reason,

    Flailing in a terrible hour,

Seeking among those I see someone to save me,

While everyone fears to touch my robe?

Until, when the blaze envelops my ribs

And the blazing fire seizes every part of me,
