The nights of the fair ones have passed; nothing is left

To me but their memory—how sweet remembrance is!

It alone is my solace when desolation fills

My world; it is my confidante in weariness.

It alone is my lesson, in which lie lessons to heed.

It alone is the wine that revives thought.

Come, give me an hour, my friends,

Perhaps I may nourish my soul or clear my sight.

This lovely woman beside me sways

Among the meadows, with no watcher but the moon.

She dictates to my heart tales of love

Through her eyes; then we offer pearls to the ear.

The flowers smile, and the breeze ululates,

And the birds sing out above the branches of the trees.

By God, how sweet the brief moments of serenity!

If only they had lasted as their trace has lasted!

Love possessed my mind and enthralled my heart,

And my infatuation grew within me, while the one I love deserted me.

I surrendered my heart willingly to the lovely woman,

And stood reciting to it, my tears pouring down:

That I was beguiled by a single night of union,

Which passed in serenity and left distress behind.

What in my head stirred the past, whose

Landmarks had faded and fate had effaced them?

Is there a mirror that conjures remembrance for me?

I truly fear that old age may cloud it.

Or has imagination's canvas stirred the images?

I truly fear that danger may befall it.

I shall die, my friends, and nothing will

Remain but a memory—is there anyone to remember?

Do not deny my love and the sincerity of my affection,

And tend my grave with bouquets of flowers.
