    فاصرفي الأحزان عنها والألم

    O daughters of poetry, wise sayings are of no avail;

So banish sorrows and pain from her,

And descend from her like pouring rain

Upon a heart blazing with fire.

O daughters of poetry, what is this darkness?

The world spends morning and evening in darkness.

Fate has frowned across its reaches,

And calamities and afflictions have held tyrannical sway.

Why does this bird sing so sorrowfully?

Why is this star flickering and vexed?

Why is this bough like a decrepit old man?

Why are these flowers like an ailing heart?

Why does this garden become, at dusk, a stage

For calamities and a dwelling place for regret?

Ah, how corrupt my age is, for it

Mocks sound judgment and scorns noble resolve.

It brought the beautiful woman down from her lofty station,

And made her drink her cup despite her proud dignity.

If we saw her amid her sorrows,

Delighting the company with honeyed melodies,

And lifting grief from her seated companions,

While her own heart wastes away with sorrow,

You would know how deeply time makes souls suffer,

And shed tears mingled with blood.

    فعلام الثغر للقوم ابتسم

    O maiden of the neighborhood, sorrow has worn you down;

Then why did your lips smile for the company?

You wear silk from their garments,

While sorrow and weariness clothe you like a robe.

You wear pearls as ornaments among them,

While suffering has long been a shackle upon you.

You drink the cup from their hands,

Even though the cup is grief and sickness.

You willingly stay awake through the night among them,

Even though your eyelids had not slept beforehand.

People have wronged your character; had

A noble man discerned what is right, he would not have acted unjustly.

They heaped disgrace and anger upon you; had

They heaped kindness upon you, your foot would not have slipped.

How many a noble soul has misery struck,

And violated its honor and virtues!

    فأجرها من شقاء ونقم

    O Lord, this soul is more deserving of favor;

So shelter her from misery and afflictions,

And make people compassionate toward her, for she

    Deserves their compassion and generosity.
