    كان محفوف النواحي بالجمال

    I lived for an age on hopes and wishes;

    it was surrounded on every side by beauty.

    I consoled myself for present misery

    with far-off fabrications of imagination.

    No harm touched my soul, nor

    could time overpower me with arrows.

    بصروف من بلاياه ثقال

    Carefree, while life raged in its fury,

    with heavy turns of its afflictions;

    مثلما يبسم في الليل الهلاه

    smiling, though fortune lay in its darkness,

    as the crescent smiles in the night;

    singing out, while birds stayed in their nests,

    songs of serenity, though life was torment.

    I adored the flowers and longed to kiss them,

    if I found no favor in beauty-marked cheeks.

    I sipped water and sought to drink it,

    if a coquettish woman's saliva eluded me.

    I befriended the star and rose toward it,

    if a companion among men kept far from me.

    Descending every day, yet ascending,

    time did not blunt my resolve in combat.

    Present among people, yet absent,

    people could not harm me with their words.

    Each day, a boundless hope was mine,

    in my life; delay could not efface it.

    ليت شعري ذلك العهد ينال

    That was a time whose bitterness grew sweet to me;

    would that I knew: can that time be regained?

    لا يلذ اليوم عندي أي حال

    I am dejected and sorrowful over my own soul;

    no condition pleases me today.

    For me, the garden brings my heart no joy,

    no, nor does the horizon hold majesty in my eyes.

    For me, the birds bring my soul no delight,

    though they sing on a proudly swaying branch.

    For me, wine does not console my heart,

    no, nor does a coquettish woman distract me.

    For me, poetry is not pleasing to my eyes,

    no, nor is my heart drawn to books.

    I do not weep for fortunes lost,

    or bliss I lived in, which then vanished.

    I have no fortune to mourn, nor

    have I tasted bliss in my life that later changed—

    only a soul through which life was sweet to me,

    though bitter sap, and a delight to me, though a mirage.

    It dried my tears with poetry, and healed

    through wishing, what the nights had wounded.

    It adorned a barren life with love,

    and filled it with the fragrance of companionship and beauty.

    What ails it? Sorrow has played havoc with it—

    this soul—and struggle has exhausted it.

    Time seized it with a hand,

    one of its two hands; beauty and well-being withered.

    Fortune wove for it the cloak of sorrow,

    so it dressed in the despair and exhaustion it brought.

    Would that I knew: has the age of youth grown distant

    and does it pass away as shadows pass?

    And has my youth's wedding feast become a funeral,

    with my far-reaching hopes wailing there?

    ويح نفسي أشباب واكتهال

    The branch of my youth is still verdant;

    alas, my soul—youth and middle age together?

    Cast off the cloak of care, O soul, and be content:

    that universe is still beautiful.
