    Ah, if only I knew: shall I rest in a grave

    whose earth I see as gold and whose pebbles as pearls?

    And will I have, at the hour of resurrection, a station

    where I swagger in self-admiration and soar with pride?

    My two friends, keep the wine from me, for I

    have seen its companion gain no righteousness through it.

    Can I hope to meet God with the cup in my hand,

    wresting sound judgment from me and engulfing me in evil?

    Leave me, you two, to commune with God in His kingdom,

    and seek in its courtyards the supreme wine.

    فيا ليت شعري هل تعللت بالأخرى

    My life, O my Lord—I have choked on it with sorrow;

    so, ah, if only I knew: could I find solace in the next life?

    And will I have a meadow in the Garden of Eternity

    where I live unfettered and dwell free?

    If I wish, its hills pour forth full-breasted maidens for me,

    and if I wish, its springs overflow with wine for me.

    I seek out wondrous beauty in its gardens,

    and plunder untouched pleasures in its serenity.

    I fly to the horizons to kiss their full moon,

    and descend to the lowlands to gather flowers.

    The beautiful houris flirt playfully with me,

    so I feel no shame at rebuke, nor seek concealment.

    أجر به ذيلاً وأزهى به كبرا

    A radiant light from God envelops me;

    with it I trail a garment's hem and glory in it with pride.

    يود لو أن العسر صاحبه العمرا

    And I look at the one who used to fault me for my hardship;

    he wishes hardship had been his companion all his life.
