عنق مائل وطرف كسير

وفم مرتج ووجه قطوب

A tilted neck and a broken gaze,

A trembling mouth and a frowning face.

كلما جاءني أخ أو صديق

رابه عند رؤيتي ما يريب

Whenever a brother or friend comes to me,

Something troubling in the sight of me unsettles him.

يحسب القوم أن ما بي سقام

أو غرام أو لوثة أو لغوب

People think what afflicts me is illness,

Or love, or madness, or exhaustion.

يسألوني وهم على رفاق

عن شجوني ولا مجيب يجيب

They ask me, though they are companions,

About my sorrows, but no one answers.

أنا لا أبتغي بصمتي بديلا

ولو أني بناره سأذوب

I seek no substitute for my silence,

Even if I melt in its fire.

أنا شاك لكن لساني صموت

أنا باكٍ لكن عداني النحيب

I have a complaint, but my tongue is silent.

I weep, but sobbing has forsaken me.

أنا بي غمة ولكن كتوم

أنا بي نشوة ولكن كئيب

I carry anguish, yet keep it hidden.

I feel elation, yet remain gloomy.

أنا لي غضبة ولكن حليم

أنا بي جنة ولكن لبيب

I have anger, yet remain forbearing.

I have madness within me, yet remain clear-minded.

أنا في الليل صمته ودجاه

أنا في الصبح فجره المكذوب

In the night, I am its silence and darkness.

In the morning, I am its false dawn.

أنا في الروض دمعه المسكوب

أنا في الطير قلبه المرعوب

In the garden, I am its falling tears.

In the bird, I am its frightened heart.

أيها الصمت لا شكوتك عمري

كل شيء فعلته محبوب

O silence, I have never complained of you in my life.

Everything you have done is dear to me.

أيها الصمت لا تملك نفسي

كلما أحرجت وضاقت جنوب

O silence, do not take possession of my soul

Whenever I am cornered and my sides constrict.
