أَقَمتُ بقصر زربيّ زَماناً

أَقَمتُ بقصر زربيّ زَماناً

وَمريده فدار بني بشير

وَمريده فدار بني بشير

I stayed at the palace of Zarbi for a time,

I lived in the palace of Zarbi for a time

And at Muraydah, then at the house of the sons of Bashir.

And its inhabitants were the tribe of Bishr

لعمرك ما الكناسة لي بأم

لعمرك ما الكناسة لي بأم

وَلا بأبٍ فأكرم من كَبيرِ

وَلا بأبٍ فأكرم من كَبيرِ

By your life, al-Kunasah is no mother of mine,

By your life! I have no maternal uncle

Nor a father—so I am nobler than a great man.

Nor a father who is nobler than the greatest
