I do not laugh when time gladdens me,

nor, while I live, am I cowed by a calamity of time.

    ولكن أَقي عرضي فيحرزه وفري

    Nor do I make my honor a shield for my wealth;

rather, I guard my honor, and my wealth safeguards it.

I refrain from begging in my hardship and show a dignified bearing,

and there is no good in one who does not refrain from begging in hardship.

And indeed, when I am in need, I am ashamed

for my friend and my brothers to know my poverty.

And I cut myself off from my brothers, though their loyalty has not changed,

out of shame and withdrawal, with no arrogance in me.

So if what I have done is shameful, sometimes

a day of misfortune comes upon a man from an unsuspected quarter.

And whoever falls into poverty learns where his friend stands,

and whoever lives will never lack affliction from time.

So if time has driven me to you,

a captive of patrons, through favors and aid held in reserve.
