Do not liken me to people you have known,

Who never once harmed a throat-pit or a jugular vein.

Indeed, I am their costliest in flesh, as they know,

When raw, and their cheapest in meat once cooked.

I am the son of the slayer of the people's hunger, as they know,

When the sky clothed its horizons in dust.

O, many a pair of troubles have I parted,

When both lodged in the breast and wrestled together.

Nor do I advise my companion to forsake his wife,

Nor do I tell her shameful things if he goes out.

I keep my disposition steady toward one whose disposition endures,

And sometimes I mix the sweet for one who mixes it.

And I cross the waste on a headlong, heedless she-camel,

When the stars are lamps in the darkness.

No trouble has God sent down that I dislike,

But He will grant me relief after it.

No people ever stretched out their hands toward eminence,

Without seeing us standing steps above them.

God has not made my heart—when there descends upon me

A sorrow that oppresses me—cramped or constrained.
