Whose are these, rising in the mirage, then sinking from sight?
For whom are mirages in the desert setting?
The chanting camel-drivers straighten their course while they sway.
The piercing-eyed correct them, yet they tilt.

We carry on through empty space the same
ascending, yet by time's decree descending.
Ascending by decree of Time descending.

Their longing lies behind them, their night journey ahead,
Their love's behind them, and the path ahead,
so, sound of eye, they are nevertheless cross-eyed.
So they are true of gaze, though circling round.

They wail together, and in their excessive wailing is yearning,
They mill confusedly in their confusion,
and bellow, with burning thirst in their prolonged bellowing.
And cry aloud, though long their cries are vain.

They did not know the Hijaz held their livelihood
and a meadow nourished by rain and the east wind.
In pasture which the live rain makes to thrive.

Which subtle minds and intellects enthrall.

Noble she-camels—if death loses its way
Wild doves that lose their path to lovers' breasts
to lovers' souls, they are its guide.
Still guide them where the spirit guides its own.

and every proud one was humbled the day they departed.
And all the proud are mean when once brought low.

That kill identities not to be killed.

Their rulers scarcely know of them, so far,
yet for us it is a favor heavy upon our necks.
Though to our necks they lie a burden sore.

The open country side refused all but disguise,
though traces may be recognized even when desolate.
Though ancient tracks may still be traced once more.

Bodies made featureless by long decay.

One for the severance absence would prolong.

We asked for Zumayya but circumspection,

That sways as spirits sway wherever they sway.

If my request has tried the souls, 'tis their affliction,
then you are affliction indeed, and you are desire.
And you're the touchstone, you, the pliant tool.

A comrade blamed you in me, so I blamed him too:
I said, "You are an enemy"; he said, "A reprover."
He said, 'Be tolerant.' And I said, 'Be cool.

Small wonder that the mean of spirit love the mean!'

it is no wonder that a miser is loved.
I gave my greetings to the blind, though great of soul.

I turned Time's sons about to test them, finding many,
my pledge; and the familiar companion grew weary.
Yet few, so few, for friendship's seal could school.

No covenants are looser made than those dividing
they were many, but friends were few.
Men, sworn to justice, biassed when they judge.

No followers than they who follow hard on riches

More surely contemptible in all their ways.

But all self-ease through begging makes one base.

with resolve that towers above the sky's roof.
In pursuit, that makes the purpose pure and proud.

That serves the cause and speeds the traveller well.

In childbirth, and the broad earth shudders all.

Keeping her unmarried is better for her than her men
You rectified them so it hurts you leave
other than you; not every man is a virile mate.
Tumbled till you return to set all right.

كذلك دولاتُ الزمان تدولُ
One day brings her joy, another bereavement;
It spends them till the jealous must feel shame
thus the turns of time revolve.
While base men take the gentle maidens' flwer.

إليك وإن طال البعادُ يؤولُ
Her knowledge kept her last breath alive: her affairs
Their surety is the day you will return-
return to you, however long the separation.
However far your land, you will come back.

I am freed and captive through nearness and distance,
I roam unsettled, settle but a moment
one day departing, another alighting.
Now up now down, ascending, ducking down.

The nights surge, then their turmoil subsides,
Through the night's days my spirit's led.
shortening and lengthening what lies between us.
Their flow ebbs out between us lingers long.

When you are absent, excessive grief is no disgrace
You disappear, but longing peaks no sorrow
for me, nor is beautiful patience beautiful.
In me. My lovely patience looms no more.

My outward state is manifest like my tears,
My state appears as restless as my tear
and my inward state is lodged deep, like consuming love.
Yet my love's core is stranger to my face.

My bones alone feast on my flesh because of you
and a devoured man with crumbled bones is raised to life.
And yet return to you, turn sole to sole.

My land has grown barren; let it not be overlooked
My land dried up. But in your closeness pour
by the moist bounty in your hands, when it is so near.
At night the plenty that my meadows crave.

Choose me for a task whose vexation is my envier's share,
Make me your bailiff out of spite for those
while my share of it in eminence is abundant.
Who'd envy me the heights I gain from you.

Support me with enough to meet my needs,
for you are witness and guarantor of my merit.
For you're my sponsor and provider both.

Do not fear, in a sword whose cutting power you have tested,
A blade whose lightning flash you've seen should cow you not
any shrinking back, even if it is notched.
Even if, in withdrawal, it should rage.

A valley may flood abundantly, though its beginning is a drop,
The torrent may pour down, dry at its source one drop
and a spear's work may be mighty, though it is slender.
The lance, though fleshless, may strike mighty blows.

How could I fear your coldness when near,
Why should I fear your turning from me now
when you maintain your kindness across distant homes?
When you are absent from me, gone from home?

'Gainst you, could cloud give comfort for an hour
its rain pouring down upon me at Hulwan?
Whose kindly rain pours down its boon on me?

Your loftiness and delight in generosity forbid it,
God forbid your peace in showers not in essence,
as does an ancient claim that never changes,
True right of old does not twist around like you.

Overseeing your beneficence to me.

If money's usefulness dwindles, or its owner is diminished,
Is not your way - if wealth brings little profit
your wealth is an allotted share that increases with requests.
Or wealth's lord gives too sparely for your fame.

love for you were a messenger to the hearts' love.
On your munificence the poor depend.

Through what you bestow, you have reserved praise for yourself,
You called hearts and their love leapt up like envoys -
and all praise of another is embezzlement.
Your passion envoy to the hearts you send.

You never praised with warmth, yet you evoked it,
upon this lush branch of yours any withering.
All praise to other men than you - abuse!

No lack makes light your brilliant moon, no branch's
aimed at you, unless time is driven back, paralyzed.
Wilt from your sapling casts you down or cowers.

to linger and stay, never intending departure.
To discredit you - hand twisted, frail and cowed.

Of bliss unending, famed, of aspects manifold.

the brilliant stars revolve, I would say, "You are hasty."
That you remain though all the world be gone.

Had Fate allowed, your days had never moved
light by generosity's decree, though weighty.
Around the circling sun your course controlled.

She yearns for her age-mates in your houses,
To me they came from you, all maidens with light dowers
as a weaned camel-calf yearns for the milk-flowing udder.
Which your munificence made weighty trousseaux.

You favored her obtaining her good luck
for her owner among you is a brother and dear friend.
So that her lord from you became as brother.

If my eloquence through her were halting speech,
Had I divulged it, it would have been shamelessness,
your kindness would teach me how to speak.
Courtesy itself would teach me how to speak.
